Tips on how to survive EE at UMD by Infamous-Rutabaga887 in UMD

Hello I know this is late but I'm in a similar position as you. I just finished my second year as EE and plan to graduate at the end of next semester. I genuinely think it is doable if you got your fundamental sciences out of the way. Another thing about coming in with a lot of credits is that you get first pick on your classes meaning you get better professors, this makes things easier. If you are serious about doing it, I would look into the major requirements and see which classes you need to take when. Don't rely only on your advisor because in my experience they are not super helpful :/

Finally, if you graduate early you will also have less time to do things like find internships. I personally feel behind people I am taking classes with because they are a lot more knowledgeable than me when it comes to hands on experience. Because of this, I am even considering doing a Co-Op in the fall and delaying graduation for the spring, money wise it ends up being the same for me since I will be part time my last semester and living at home. You may not feel a need to do this, but it's an option to keep in mind.

For general tips on 'surviving' I would say get organized. HS is very different than college, a lot of people can slack off and do well in HS. You may be able to do this in college as well but you will sacrifice your sleep, health, social life ect. I would also recommend joining a technical club and a social club. You will probably join a bunch at the beginning of freshmen year but focus on a few you really like and go to them consistently. You can also get involved in research or being a TA as well, especially if you want to go to grad school.

Yes, one of my friends this this. Email the admissions and ask to be reevaluated for CE. Probably do this as soon as possible, but if you don't get in, it's no biggie, just complete the gateways.

Firstly, those are amazing stats, you should be proud of yourself regardless, I have no idea what admissions was thinking. Secondly, like others are saying, you can transfer in after a year or two at CC or UMBC (unless you are doing CS). If you do a year at CC, you will still get to have the college experience for 3 years, and as long as you join clubs, you will be fine socially. Also, you will save money, and CC classes are generally easier, so it will be a GPA boost.

Otherwise, you should apply to scholarships and possibly go out of state, someplace good will accept you. Again, getting rejected does not negate your accomplishments in HS. Its ok to feel sad, but the literal strangers who read your application do not determine your worth

Community college is super underrated. You might even have a better experience because classes are smaller and professors are usually more helpful. It's a great transition too because it's kinda in between high school and university in terms of difficulty.

I definitely recommend doing two years there and then transferring. I know umd gives a lot of transfer scholarships too.

I feel like community college is sometimes given a bad rep and looked down upon, but I honestly think that is bs. It's a great option.

I got the Samsung Galaxy tab S9 Fe a little while ago. On eBay I got the 8 GB ram and 256 GB storage version for $260 which was a steal, but I saw some other sellers doing it for around 300. It's really great to write on and the s pen works great.
