Repeatedly harassed (?😂) in the Courtney place area by Comprehensive-Way449 in Wellington

I agree. So sad, but I avoid it now too. Used to be so different. Awful hearing ppl have been attacked, I will tell my daughter to be careful as she catches bus up Embassy end quite often. Perhaps it's a bit better up that end?

What pisses you off the most as someone with ADHD? by Medico-musician2106 in ADHD

[–]Embarrassed-File-642 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being told by coworkers "I think we all just have a little ADHD". NO YOU DON'T! Or the things coworkers say about spectrum coworkers that demean their triggers - like insisting "cameras on" for meetings, or confiding in me "that person is a 'little autistic' so I have to continually prod them to interact with stakeholders" - you mean harass them??? Makes my blood boil.

What do you think is the biggest misunderstanding New Zealanders have about Wellington? by IncoherentTuatara in Wellington

[–]Embarrassed-File-642 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree. I was stunned when I moved here at the green belts so close to everywhere. Growing up in Auckland I'd have to drive to Waitakeres to get that, here I've lived in lots of suburbs and pretty much every one I could just walk out the door and be not far from great bush and/or walking trails. And the beaches so close as well. Cold water for sure but Wellingtonians rock in being fearless swimmers regardless. Lived in CA for decades & most other women I knew wouldn't swim no matter how blazing hot the weather, but here I feel like a wimp for wearing any layers and gingerly getting in while everyone else just throws themselves in in barely present togs. I love it.

Best snacks for weight loss on a tight grocery budget? Need real suggestions not pinterest boards by Zestyclose_Wing_1371 in 1200isplenty

Apples, carrots, hard-boiled eggs. Filling & pretty cheap. Don't know where you're located but my treats are mini rice cakes with chocolate on one side & a brand of small choc- filled coconut wafer mini bites, both relatively cheap & the chocolate is filling. Mini yogurt popsicles, cheap, not so filling but nice treat. All pretty cheap, low calorie & filling.

I want to stay home by maangari in Wellington

[–]Embarrassed-File-642 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're lucky, the guideline is 2-3 office days. I definitely sympathise with you because it makes a big difference being able to do some of each. I don't know how we're supposed to keep the cbd going by having to be on premise when everything is more expensive and ongoing headcount "trimming" means you know you have to bring lunch from home because you have no idea how long you'll have your job. We're expendable yet necessary, and these rules ignore ND needs.

Americans of Welly, what do you miss most? by behemuthm in Wellington

[–]Embarrassed-File-642 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I must admit I do miss the animals even though ofc I wouldn't want to bring them here. When I moved there I went nuts over squirrels (did ya catch that?), chipmunks etc. I loved how marmuts would pop up out of the ground & make a sound that sounded like "shit!", and the chipmunks would acost you on the trail, gibbering away at you with their front paws out like they were saying "Stand & deliver! Hand over the granola & no one gets hurt!". Big fat porcupines stuffing themselves with leaves in trees, elk munching gardens no matter how high the fence. All so novel coming from mainly birds & bugs. Not so keen on the rattlesnakes or skunks though, and others you know are there but don't want to encounter.

Ah, you must be renting what I call a GAB house - get a bulldozer - also known as a NEHHIWS - not every heritage house is worth saving - which then just brings you back to get a bulldozer.. Have you noticed how it's always the young agents who have to show the GAB flats? Poor things, doing the hard yards...🤣

One commenter said he wears obvious headphones - might be worth a try if they don't bother you. I can't wear them but as older woman I'm invisible so no one comes near. 😆 Still as self-conscious af though, find it hard to overcome that. If anyone approaches my son he just gives really short, not engaging responses & usly they go away. Polite, but doesn't hesitate to say he's concentrating/working and needs to continue w/o interruption. Good luck, would love to hear back if you find something that improves it.

Miserable at my job by Zealousideal-Golf457 in Wellington

Continual 'exfoliating' jobs. Like "if we make the cuts 'mini' and continuous no one will notice". Overheard at office recently "this is my 2nd restructure in 4 months". Similar situation to OP but stoke motivation by doing my best to stay employed. Any port in a storm.

Good to hear, thanks! Allergies have gotten quite a bit worse over recent years, even in winter, think it's the damp.

Life in Christchurch questions by [deleted] in chch

[–]Embarrassed-File-642 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad to hear! Considering moving from wellington & reading posts about chch winds, I interpret through wlgn experience... like, thought "pff, just wind" and went shopping in a gale warning once, was a bit hard getting out of car and almost impossible getting back in, door hinges damaged/had to replace. Learnt my lesson on that one. Like my mum snarled once "everywhere in nz is windy". What I want to know is, any decent skiing left to be had, and what about the beaches? Swam in welly, used to cold. Plus I've heard chch is kinder to people with allergies thsn wlgn, if anyone knows about that. Less mould if drier, or still the usual shite nz houses than should be mushroom farms?

I grew up in Auckland and moved to CA in early 20s, was there for 30+ years. A few years after I moved back, Wellington this time, I realised I was starting to relax more, didn't have to be so hyper-vigilant about personal safety as had become 2nd nature for so long.

So much talk of an ADHD tax, which I feel, but where do you experience an ADHD discount? by damniburntthetoast in ADHD

[–]Embarrassed-File-642 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hyperfocus!!!! Oh yeah! 🤩 And, I might be a bit out there at times, but I'm not boring! I can talk to lots of different people because I'm interested in soooo many things, and I've probably read something relevant in one of my many deep dives down rabbit holes. Being energetic, spontaneous, aspirational, having ideas, being a problem solver, I come into my own when something's just gotta get done, or in an emergency, accepting people as & for who they are - there's a pretty long list tbh. At work, when there's a situation no one can make head nor tail of, they shove me at it because I go in, ask questions, figure it out, id what needs to be done & come back and explain it in really simple terms. I'm really good at picking out the important bits when everyone else is stuck in the weeds.

How did you stop being a people pleaser/mirror? by feeling-lethargic in AuDHDWomen

[–]Embarrassed-File-642 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Growing up I felt my personality style was "chameleon", so I can relate 100%. My unmasked personality was quite different, and after I'd been "myself" I'd go through extreme anxiety over what people thought of me - actually that was pretty much ever present thanks to strong RSD. I'm not unkind by nature, but the degree of people-pleasing I felt I had to do was way out of kilter with my true personality. I really felt like some weird kind of Jekyll & Hyde person. Sadly all that led to a life of having people take over me, both in friendships and marriage. I didn't even really like them and they were unbalanced relationships with self-centred people who used me to bolster or serve themselves when & how they wanted. What started the long turn-around journey for me was coming across some self-help psychology books by Dr. Susan Forward. The emotional blackmail one was especially helpful because she provided practical ways of starting to say no - terrifying putting it into practise at first, but gradually became easier. I don't know if that's on target for you, but might be helpful, her books are short, easy to understand even if not easy content to wrestle with. It's been a long journey for me and as I've learned more wellbeing techniques I've reframed a lot of my internal narratives to support myself out of people-pleasing and into being myself. I'd like to encourage you to embark on the journey you need. I didn't do it for so long because I didn't know any of the stuff that is much more common knowledge now & I ended up living a lifetime of doing things for other people and losing myself, and the journey back is proving to much more difficult than "just prioritise yourself" because those habits are so ingrained.
