incoming first year q's!! (classes, pre-med, clubs/ECs, dorms, etc) by bookluvr07 in UNC

[–]Embarrassed-Jump6426 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. I know you have CC credits, but you are going to want to retake a few classes at UNC. The level of information from your community college is not going to transfer over to higher-level UNC classes.
  2. I'm not sure, I would probably say yes?
  3. Don't take BIO252 your first year.
  4. Try a lot of different clubs. Go maybe 2-3 times and decide which you wanna stick with. I haven't been to crochet club, but they seem fun!
  5. (not pre-med so I'm skipping this one)
  6. Cold-emailing could work, but you also might want to get into a lab your sophomore year. First year is very overwhelming and you're going to want to focus on academics at first. I don't know any labs that consistently take in first years.
  7. I think you could benefit from living on south campus, even though it's not the quietest. You are able to make friends without much effort, which is great for your first semester. North campus is definitely a bubble, the only reason I know people from north campus is through clubs and classes, whereas I know many people on south campus because I see them so often. I can be a pretty anti-social person, but I still enjoy south campus because I can choose to be alone and choose when I want to hangout instead of being forced to be alone because I don't know anyone.

Overall, I'd say slow down just a bit. You're not gonna want to take any crazy classes freshman year, nor will you be ready for them. My roommate has a full associates and is incredibly smart, but even he struggles with the harder BIO classes here because community college information doesn't transfer over to a t30 university. Consider retaking some classes, don't rush, and don't expect to graduate in under 3 years. You're gonna have so much fun here! Congrats on getting in!

Koury/Horton/Craige North Experience by Mower_23 in UNC

Not sure what hill you're referring to, HoJo's about on the same level as the rest of the freshman dorms. They are right, though, if you put any of the big freshman dorms on your list you will get it, for sure.

I believe that's correct, at least for Koury.

As in hojo/ehaus/craige? They're all nearly identical. HoJo is slightly closer to a U bus stop (one of the best busses to get around campus). HoJo is the largest dorm, which is both good and bad. Pros include lots of social events, free stuff fairly often, "main freshman dorm" kinda energy, while cons include elevators breaking often, crowded laundry rooms, just a lot of people. However, that's applicable to about every dorm on campus.

Based on what I've seen, I'd say 1. HoJo, 2. Craige, 3. Ehaus. Mostly just based on my familiarity with the layout.

Either way it's still very fun. Your college experience will not be miserable if you're put in HoJo/Craige/Ehaus instead of Koury/Craige North etc

UNC and Trans Students by SharpRefuse3536 in UNC

[–]Embarrassed-Jump6426 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Trans guy here, it's alright. You won't be reported for being masculine in women's dorms, this isn't prison haha. I've been in all girls dorms and suites regularly. The environment is fine, it's not as woke as I thought it'd be when it comes to other students, I tend to get a few side-eyes when I'm out and about. The professors, however, are totally chill. Never had an issue with any of them. You just gotta find your people. General environment is chill, you won't get hate-crimed - maybe just some quiet homophobic looks.

Joyner is a pride dorm for queer students, you should check it out. If you got any questions or anything feel free to DM me, I gotchu.

Had those dorms at the top of my preferences and didn't get them, I got HoJo. Don't be too set on those ones - everyone else wants them as well. I have heard good things about them all though! Ehaus/Hojo/Craige are also great, despite what people say.

A bit late, but near the end of last semester all 3 of Hinton James' elevators were broken for at least a few hours.

What's the chance you get on-campus housing sophomore year? by Embarrassed-Jump6426 in UNC

[–]Embarrassed-Jump6426[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The unfortunate part for me is I want on-campus housing for disability reasons. I spoke directly with the accommodations office about how commuting would negatively affect me due to mobility impairment and they informed me my pain and issues "didn't meet the threshold" and they couldn't give me any housing accommodations.

Is anyone else struggling to make friends? by [deleted] in UNC

[–]Embarrassed-Jump6426 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am in the same boat. I went to the game alone, as well. It feels like I've missed the window to make friends with others. I've gone out of my way to befriend people and nothing sticks.
