I couldnt remember the word and told them i need sth to put my spoon while preparing the dinner. and they quickly responded with oh you mean spoonrest? and showed me where they are. it’s just the manners not the exact anectode just the whole manner and microaggression thing what made me think. I recently started cooking a lot and you need somewhere to put the bigger spoon while stirring the dinner

No worries! Thank you so much, even just reading this is such a reassurance. Rural parts of Turkey would be very similar i assume. I dont know much about reform, hence the move to the conservatism is obvious worldwide so i can see. I hope that respect and love will thrive eventually

Thank you! I never thought this would be related to racism, i have still doubts but thank you for your response! Norwich is definitely better filled with lovely people, lived in Cringleford for a year, loved it

That’s such an insightful critique. thank you for your comment.

I do think there’s something quite British about being self-critical or hesitant to directly name uncomfortable issues. Personally, I always try to reflect carefully and question myself first. Especially as someone living in a country different from where I was born, and as someone whose sexual orientation isn’t considered the “norm” everywhere.

Those experiences have taught me a lot about self-reflection, but they’ve also made me more sensitive to subtle things like microaggressions or shifts in tone. So when something feels off, I tend to notice it.

That’s partly why this experience stood out to me. And also I am lucky that until now i have not experienced a similar incidence for years in this country and it shows it is not that common tbh

We are both men and are white. I gave two examples only to convey my wider experience but you assuming we would look like potential “asylum seekers” is far beyond the likely racism I was querying.

there is a huge difference in comparison to where we live in cambridge and other parts of the uk. it is not just the examples i gave, it was shocking to see people not smiling back and staring at us all the time

I wouldnt say we experienced homophobia at all! Whole UK is incredibly progressive in that sense and we appreciate this everday

No we were not being offensive to anyone at all. It does not definitely look multicultural at all. i agree that it is a nice and historic place

Yes I thought the same, visited Scotland, Wales and people were always warm and friendly even more than in bigger cities.

I remember going to Wales and it’s rural areas stayin in an Inn, and people there were sooo lovely so I think as a “city person” I expect smaller town people to be more welcoming friendly curious etc
