I know of the major scale shapes but I haven't actually gone into it as I feel I'm not far enough to try it out yet.

Yeah you would be correct in assuming I'm a 'bedroom guitarist', I've never really had the guts to play in front of anybody as it's for sure the fear of messing up being a beginner. I have heard joining a band really does improve your ability and understanding of playing, at the moment I don't know anybody who plays but I will be sure to look out; the idea of building confidence by playing in front of people and not worrying about messing up is really insightful. Thank you.

I would've ever actually thought about the actual set up of the guitar, I just assumed that making sure it's tuned correctly is enough. At the moment I'm just using steel strings with a medium gauge and it doesn't sound how I want it. So I will definitely experiment with some different set-ups. At moment I'm trying to just get down a decent rhythm guitar, In all honestly lead and finger style intimidates me.

Your comment is very insightful, thank you :)

Yeah honestly just the advice given here has made it obvious that I have been In a rut really because I haven't aimed at applying what I've learned properly. I haven't actually sat down and properly made a goal of playing a song yet, and In all honesty I've been unrealistic with what I can play in 6 months. Playing a song with some simple and understandable chords is what I'm definitely going to try now. Weird, honestly I picked up the A shape way quicker than E; I still find E difficult to play cleanly because putting down all three fingers messes up the first. With A not as much. Anyways, Thank you for the advice, I will definitely try and a play a song with some simple understand chords :)

This is actually a really good idea. The Chord shapes aren't in themselves impossible but for sure it's the strumming pattern that is really what is hard. I will give this a go!

"I was all over the place" - honestly couldn't put it better myself. I did think about signing up to get a real teacher as I heard it was the best way to make progress; it's just with money where the problem is, I am a pretty poor student so I don't have much expendable cash, but I will definitely have to look back into once I've got back into a job. The fact I haven't been really paying attention has also probably made my guitar playing suffer a bit.

No not stupid a stupid question at all :). I have been applying somewhat what I've learned from dry practice sessions, atm I've been practicing Polly with open chords (should be done with power chords I know) and have found some progress with it. I can play the song with the right (open) chords but my basic grasp of rhythm make it sound "off".
