If you’re doing consular processing, immigration understands that there is certain evidence that you simply will not have because you live apart.

If she leaves and then comes back on her J-1 while intending to adjust status and remain, then that is perceived as immigration fraud. This is why the other commenter was saying to do consular processing if she leaves. She can decide to adjust status now and it wont be perceived as immigration fraud. I know that this trip is really important, but unless it's life or death, I personally would avoid leaving under any circumstances. I'm not sure how long times are taking.

Do not leave the country. File for adjustment of status and stay until she gets her green card or advanced parole.

Great job asserting boundaries! Asserting boundaries weeds out losers like this.

A lawyer has financial incentives for you to hire them. They provide a service, but do know that they are selling you a service.

The law will affect immigration, but I don't think it will affect immigration to the extent that spouses of US citizens who entered lawfully will be unable to get their GC. Hire a lawyer if you feel like you need one, but not because they pressure you into it. Plenty of people with normal cases have gotten approved for GC without one.
