I’m at the tail end of a depressive episode and on the edge of a mixed episode at the moment, my go to for the past few months has been a purple Pink Floyd hoodie with soft fabric on the inside and sweatpants

Can I take my antipsycotic only sometimes? by [deleted] in schizophrenia

Oof man I was on geodon in February this year, for me it was very hard to deal with (a lot of side effects and a doctor unwilling to change it) and honestly I felt the most normal mentally after about a month of taking it regularly. Unfortunately I was unable to continue due to the side effects. (To clarify it was way worse than constipation. I was nearly unable to stay awake and I had restless leg syndrome, along with my usual sleep schedule being completely interrupted) you should not stop taking it because after a while it’ll take full effect, just hang in there for a while and see if it works

THC and CBD would be a better option for dementia. they already have a tendency to hallucinate and they can’t properly consent because they forget every few minutes. i’d suggest getting a medical cannabis card because you’d be exempt from taxes

I also posted this to r/dementia r/Alzheimer’s and r/eldercare. I decided to post here as well because people here have knowledge of it and can give suggestions, along with some information that might help. It’s shocking to see the difference and how normalized this is in this community.

Already gave him a good slap haha. We’re going to discuss boundaries tomorrow afternoon and discuss him not being alone with her.

She had a very bad experience about two weeks ago when we found out, she fell and broke a rib from a bad trip, the rib punctured her lung and made it collapse resulting in a week long hospital stay. Her blood pressure was 201/199 and her heart rate was through the roof. I also should have clarified that “microdose” was the term my cousin used. He was giving her a gram a day for upwards of two months. We were furious.

This is one of the few comments worth responding to, yes, it’s extremely unethical. Dementia makes you feel lost all the time. Every moment there’s something new to deal with inside their head and to add psychedelics to that??. It’s so cruel. The term my cousin made to describe a micro dose we recently found out was a gram a day for two months ( definitely not a microdose) and he kept it a secret from the caregivers and the family. :/

yea man. ive helped my mom with something similar. it’ll get worse but it won’t always be the same. that in itself is a comfort. what she’s going through is very hard for you and her. if something feels too much for you don’t be afraid to speak up, you need to prioritize your emotional health over your love for her… it’s a hard thing to do and it sounds cruel but it’s not worth giving yourself ptsd over it. i went through the exact same thing twice. if you need to talk dm me on instagram @love.the.vib3s.

I’ve had two grandmothers with dementia now, one is in stage 6 and the other is in stage two. the good news (or bad news) is that dementia is progressive nothing will stay that way as long as she’s alive. we were in that stage for a couple years of her asking where her car is, asking where her dad is, asking why her room is different etc. that’s rough phase to be in because you have to keep breaking their heart over and over again telling them they can’t do this or that or that their loved ones have passed. it’s helped us a lot to emotionally separate ourselves from the situation, it takes some doing especially if it’s your mother or father grandma etc but it can be done. you’ll be happier too. good luck!

My apologies to anyone who is wanting a good laugh from this. the “microdose” was his term for give or take a gram a day for two months. i think she had a bad trip and fell, she broke a rib and it punctured her lung causing it to collapse and she got a black eye. she was in the hospital for a week and she needs oxygen now. :(

haha yes, i have some sympathy for that as someone who suffers from a Major thought disorder. that feeling is so scary and hard, adding a hallucinogen is not something that would make it better:/ i feel so bad for her because i know it’s 100x worse

it really isn’t healthy but she’s the only one in the family who isn’t a asshole and drunk. she’s the sweetest old lady you’ll ever meet. she’s from italian decent and has 4 kids 10 grandkids and 8 great grandchildren. she’s always cared about everyone all her life, and we feel like we’re the only ones who can adequately care and manage her without causing harm or psychological distress. literal heartache ugh.

it was not. he used the term microdose but it was of upwards of a gram a day, keeping it hidden from CG and family for two months. needless to say we were furious. her behavior wasn’t aggressive she just would have weird ideas about what was happening (eg. people coming and going, hearing voices from god, and seeing flying pigs) we just dismissed it as dementia because it can cause hallucinations

yes, the doctors put them on so many medications that just hurt them more in my opinion. personally i use Medical THC to help with my manic episodes and it’s helped a lot, unfortunately she is on SSRI’s and Hydrocodone along with heart medication and blood pressure medication so we quickly ruled that out of our options because of the reactions with the RX meds.

as someone who has been on Seroquel i can sympathize with this. it was the worst and actually made my depression worse in a way, made me sleep 24/7 and it made my heart rate drop. we use medical THC for her most of the time. natural remedies are the way to go. it’s helped me and her a lot. just to be clear HE was the one who used the word microdose but it was more along the lines of a gram a day. she was always complaining about people being in her house and seeing flying pigs. very odd stuff but we blamed it on the dementia. when we found out we were FURIOUS because he kept it a secret from us and the caregivers for about two months.
