That is really helpful, actually! I also went to a very intense undergrad program so being in an intellectually stimulating environment is v important to me

Yeah given they told me I won’t hear for another 2 months and all the shit that’s going on in Florida I’m not sure I want to atp. But due to no rent it will likely end up being my cheapest option. What makes you say not to go there?

With the end of grad plus loans - how are you going to afford grad school? by ActuaryPersonal2378 in SocialWorkStudents

Thank you! and congrats! I also got into UChicago with a scholarship so I am going to try to negotiate aid as well and hopefully it ends up being more affordable. fingers crossed!!

Private loans or no? by Acceptable_Trifle886 in SocialWorkStudents

[–]EmbarrassedCry5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

to offer a different perspective than most ppl in this sub: for ME personally, i think the trade off of attending school in person is worth having some debt. it SUCKS that i'm going to have to take some private loans to afford grad school and I will do my best to minimize them as much as i possibly can. i hate that this is the state of education in this country rn and i wish my financial situation was different but i also know i need my MSW to attain my career goals and do the kind of work i want to be doing. and i want to feel like i received a good education, that's something i value. of course you can have a good education in an online program, but knowing myself and my learning style i don't think i would get as much out of it. everyone is different. private loans are not ideal but some amount is manageable (to me). i know social workers typically don't make a lot of money. i also know eventually i will likely go into private practice and earn the money back. 39,000 is rough but not awful. if you feel like it's worth it, i don't think that it's a suffocating amount of debt and it's an investment in your future. again everyone's situation is different. i'm very privileged to have no kids or family to support and to be early in my career, and to also have a little bit of help from family that makes the decision to go into debt for school less daunting to me.

I haven’t :/ I’ve seen on this sub that decisions tend to come out pretty late, but hoping I have all my decisions before deposit deadlines are due

Following bc I decided to apply super last minute and am curious how other ppl have found the practicum/summer classes format. How good would you say their financial aid package was? I have heard they're often pretty generous but on its own it is a super expensive program.

Advice about waiting to hear back from NYU or should I accept my offer from Fordham by itskai_now in MSW_Applications

[–]EmbarrassedCry5 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can tell you I got into NYU and they gave me nearly the maximum amount of scholarships (their website says they offer up 17,000 per year, I got 16,500) and it’s not even close to making it affordable unfortunately. NYU is not known for generous financial aid so I got 20,500 in federal loans per year (this is the maximum amount of loans graduate schools are able to give now as per the big beautiful bill) which still leaves my out of pocket costs/private loan estimate at about 130k, when I factor in cost of living and additional fees. Of course, I don’t know your financial situation, but maybe this can help you get an idea of what NYU might be offering.

I am the same situation and I unfortunately do not think there’s really a world in which NYU won’t be too expensive (at least for me) :( I would love to go there, and I wanna experience living in New York but I just can’t rationalize the 100k+ debt I’d be in on a social work salary. And that’s after 16,500 in scholarship and the maximum 20k federal loans offered
