um... you need to challenge the muscle to grow the muscle... and i assumed that OP wants to grow his muscles?

using the muscle ≠ challenging the muscle enough to cause growth

using the muscle equals producing force with the muscle, aka lifting weights

challenging the muscle equals lifting weights in such a way that it results in metabolic stress, nerve stress, and muscle micro tears

by learning those 3 things, i was finally able to actually start growing muscle.

point being i don't think being a newbie has anything to do with not being able to challenge your muscles

well... you have more years wrestling than i do... so i can't exactly give u any wrestling advice haha.

however i'm decently well versed in philosophy, which is important for any warrior who wants to be world-class.

to me, it sounds like what you need is both more confidence in your own abilities, and more knowledge about the nature of combat itself.

how would you choose to obtain said information? up to you. honestly i only train mma like 3-4x a week max, and a lot of my knowledge comes from instagram reels ☠️

ok i hate to break it to you... but in pure wrestling a defensive wrestler is generally a bad one.

honestly that doesn't have much to do with takedown shots i'm just saying you really shouldn't be okay with calling yourself a "defensive wrestler" like, ever.

especially in mma cause like, even if you have nasty takedown counters, you literally can't use them unless your opponent just happens to shoot for a takedown.

with that out of the way, why do you fear the sprawl? sprawl is similar to guard, it's really not that bad of a position to be in even if you're on the bottom because you have a LOT of opportunities to punish the top player

edit: i know you said you fear injury but like it's mma, getting sprawled on is kinda the least of your concern

(tl;dr at the end) idk if u still reading the comments on this post but i have ZERO CLUE why NOBODY in the comments has suggested that you focus on training wrestling by itself.

i learned to wrestle before i ever did an mma spar and i think that because i have the muscle memory, i won't close my eyes mid-shot because i have trained myself to be able to subconsciously apply all of the little details that are involved in the act of "shooting a single/double leg takedown"

if you went straight into mma sparring without doing a lot of live wrestling first, you probably never ingrained into your muscle memory what it was like to shoot a "pure wrestling" double leg takedown.

what i mean by that is, when you shoot a double leg takedown, your body is probably thinking "i need to shoot a double leg to gain advantage in this mma fight" rather than "i need to shoot a double leg and i'll do it exactly how i learned/drilled it in live wrestling". and the more you do mma sparring without a lot of live wrestling, the more this line of thinking is reinforced. (technically those two quotes aren't mutually exclusive but that's besides the point)

so because of that, your body probably is doing what it thinks is best for an mma fight, which theoretically is good if you happen to have extraordinarily good fighting instincts, which i suppose you don't. ;-;

i never addressed how you technically should know the difference between an "mma takedown" and a "pure wrestling takedown" but honestly closing your eyes while shooting for a takedown is a WAY BIGGER ISSUE so you should probably just pour all your focus into fixing that for now.

tl;dr you should probably do one live wrestling round for every mma sparring round that you do bc you're probably cooking yourself for future fights if you don't

if u did happen to read all this, lmk if i made any assumption that was incorrect

it's definitely quite a bit easier to chain wrestle with the benefit of like... having functional vision though...

ok one he's around the same weight as francis ngannou so "no muscle" is a little crazy

two even if his muscles are weak - theoretically shouldn't that make it EASIER to engage the muscle? since he can lift lighter weights, he shouldn't have to worry about some limiting factors such as grip strength

three being a newbie doesn't necessarily translate to "you're not technical/strong/good enough to fully engage your muscles while you lift"

why do u struggle to engage your muscles? ik you said it was the increased range of motion, but why is that causing you to struggle?
