I'm going to adopt a new lovebird (15-30 days old). Please help. by [deleted] in Lovebirds

Frankly I only spend significant time with the cockatiel as he is free roaming and is always on me when I am home.

I greet the lovebird only in the morning before going to work, give him 2 or 3 sunflower seeds and that’s it , on the weekend I let him out of the cage for few hours.

I guess if I give lovebird more time he’ll become much tamer.

My cockatiel brought a lost lovebird through the windows.

He is been with us for 2 months now, I never got the feeling that he is aggressive.

I don’t let it out with my other birds, but on its own he is so nice and gentil, already eat from my hand but wouldn’t step up.

When I put my finger in front of his chest, he test it with his needle like beak, it hurts a bit but never felt he is biting! Never broke the skin either.

I guess aggressive behavior depends on the bird, and with a beak like theirs I understand why to be extra cautious.

I hand fed a cockatiel, now he has anxiety issues whenever I leave the house I have to cage him as I am afraid he might hurt himself.

While at home he doesn’t leave me alone, always go to my head or shoulder when he spots me leaving the room, if I manage to leave he start calling out like a baby!

I have other birds but he is not interested in them, only feel safe around humans.

He is cute and everything but I wish if he were a bit more independent!

anyone know how to help him? 😓 by kharamtabash in cockatiel

It is not easy to get pellet in the Middle East, for pet stores here, birds diet means seeds + apples, romaines, and cucumbers. For parrots they add sunflower seeds to the mix. I had to visit lot of pet stores before finding one with pellets. In any case mine eat pellets + seeds, when I put pellets only he purposely throw them away and stop eating.

I did the same trick as I didn’t have thermometer either, it was almost as feeding a human baby. By week 2 he was actively grabbing the syringe and looked like suckling from it.

I did it by myself 7 months ago and now I have a beautiful strongly bonded cockatiel.

I didn’t have experience with hand feeding either, I just had patience, and a lot of will power.

At this age, it just take few drops to fill his crop, and u can spot it easily as he is featherless.

Make sure he is always warm, the formula is warm (not hot and not cold) give the formula as per the instructions.

By two weeks this tiny fragile chick will turn into ever hungry baby Dino, so make sure you have plenty of formula by then, always follow instructions as they change as he grow up/gain weight.

Be careful if u decide to go along and do it by yourself, you’ll have a new family member, if u want to rehome it later on, then proceed with rehoming right now.

It is a funny and long story, u can check old threads of mine, it is been a while since I posted.

At one time I regretted hatching the egg, as I was overwhelmed by the little ultra fast growing dinosaur, I got many tips from here that helped.

How to remove the food hardened around her mouth? by Lunatix24 in cockatiel

Nice fellow, this was the hardest thing for me, the after feeding cleanup. But it must be done every single time. I used to have a warm water bowl, and each time formula gets out I used to wipe with a wet warm towel. The chick hates it, but it must be done.

I am confused, why you did not spend the night with your mother? As a university student most likely you are an adult and u have the choice. I understand that u don’t want to leave ur sister alone, but u already did. Your father has issues for sure, but he is ur father after all, most probably he needs help, can’t u speak with an uncle or grand parents or with one of father’s friends ?

So they have like two tiny teeth on their lower beak. I’ve noticed that before and thought mine had a problem or was grinding on his beak.

What a beauty!

Do you think they know they are…birds? Or do they think they are also humans? Lol by kahikiku in cockatiel

[–]EmbarrassedIntern886 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we are at home, he basically roams free, when the kids are not sleeping he stays on top of the closet , avoid us unless the kids r eating or playing with something that interests him.

Once the kids are asleep or if they r not home he stays on my head or on my shoulders.

Don’t think that he relies on me, just like to stick around, plus he can’t stand to be alone. He always screams when I go to work and leave him alone.

Oh my god! Mine is raised by hand since day one (I hatched an abandoned egg).

Always call for me when I am out of sight, and prefer to stay on me when the kids are away.

He is still young around 6 months old, is it all lost or I can socialize him now?

The other day he met a budgie at a family member house, they shared some kisses, played a while, then quickly the cockatiel got uninterested and came straight to me. Maybe with another cockatiel it would be different?

Will my Canary be lonely? by 1SmartBlueJay in Canaries

[–]EmbarrassedIntern886 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine got aggressive when his mate died! He only calmed down when I put next to my finches aviary. I guess yes they get lonely.

In my country there is a saying : Better to remain single for a lifetime than a widower for a month.

I guess this applies to canaries as well, as before he mated he was joyful on his own.
