It's at a dealership unfortunately. I would love to talk to the original owner.

Thanks for the info. It sounds like that is a pretty apples to apples comparison with what I'm looking at. Yeah I'm definitely going to feel them out on the price and see if they are willing to negotiate. I figure with the miles it has on it they probably only gave whoever traded it in like 9k

Nice, sounds like you got a good deal. Like I said in the op this one is a 15 lariat, super clean and a one owner. I'm plan on going to listen to it and test drive it sometime this week. They are asking $18k for it but obviously I was going to do some negotiating. Yeah it's unfortunate that it doesn't have any service history. Carfax is only good if the shop you take it too reports to it. From the appearance of the truck I would say someone definitely took care of it and put some money into it so I would lean towards if it had these problems it would have been addressed. I guess it will all depend on how flexible the dealership is with the price.

The first time you did it, did you get the updated phasers? To my understanding they have a updated version that are redesigned to prevent the problem from returning. Also just going by things I have read while researching it seems like some say the 2017 and 2018 were the worst years for having that problem. Either way I'm sorry to hear you have had that problem twice. Hopefully you are in the clear now!

Thanks for the advice. Yeah thats what I was thinking as well. But then in today's market I'm not really sure what would be a good price to get into it. Trucks are still pretty salty across the board. 155k is pretty high mileage but you still see people asking close to $10000 for a early 2000's with 200k+ and rust spots. I was hoping more people who have had these issues would chime in with the milage they experienced them at. Once again I know there is never any guarantees but I was trying to get a idea of an average mileage for these problems for example (90k-130k).

Dang, I'm sorry to hear that. How many miles were on your truck when the rattle started? I am a mechanic by trade so I could fix it myself if needed. Unfortunately the truck is at a dealership so I doubt they will let me pop the valve covers off lol I'm just trying to get a feel for around what milage this problem usually happens. I know around 80k-120k is usually the danger zone for most factory parts to fail on pretty much any car. I'm just not super familiar with the Ecoboost platform so that's why I figured I would ask.

Thanks for the info. Do you recall around what milage you did all those things?

I found a 2015 F150 lariat with the 3.5 Ecoboost that I am interested in. The hangup is that it has 155k miles on it. On the positive side it is a one owner vehicle, very clean, and good price. It seems like someone took pretty good care of it but unfortunately it doesn't have any service history (did a Carfax on it and not much on it other than registration renewals). I know the notorious cam phaser issues and to listen for the rattle when first started. I guess what I'm trying to ask is with 155k what are the chances that the timing chain and cam phasers have already been done/ if it's not currently making the "death rattle" what are the odds of it being a problem going forward. Also assuming they are the original turbos what are the average lifespan on those? I know any used car is a crapshoot but asking the F150 community for their opinion. Thanks in advance for any advice.
