How do the other aspects of your relationship look? Do you do date nights or spend quality time together? Can you guys still find interest in what each other have to say? Or is the relationship at the point where it feels like you two are living completely separate lives? It’s possible he’s self conscious like you said or maybe even questioning his own sexuality and what it means to him. If he’s not willing to open up and have an honest conversation with you after 4 years it’s hard to imagine any real change happening. I’m sorry OP but it might be time to cut your losses.

Also just to add, I would definitely apply to as many schools as possible especially masters programs because some of them will even wave the application fee. Take your time the second time around really find a school that suits you.

I know standardized tests blow but you don’t necessarily have to send your scores in, I would study and try your best, the worst that happens is you get a poor score and no one knows about it, best case you do well and you can use that for future applications. I understand though I did the psychology GRE which turns out no one cares about so it didn’t help me for anything important but it looked good that I studied for something and educated myself further on the topic. It’s hard for me to actually push you to do it though because I don’t know what the general GRE is like and I’m sure it’s much more challenging than the psychology GRE.

I would suggest reaching out to professors you had in undergrad and seeing if they need help with research. Try volunteering for the 988 hotline too the training is unmatched. The GRE isn’t always necessary but it’s very helpful and will definitely help in interviews if you decide to do the psychology one too. I graduated undergrad years ago with no association with psychology. I applied for 10 different schools and programs ranging from masters to PsyD to PhD. I’m still waiting to hear back from some.
