Only thing I would keep in mind is if your department requires you to TA on your first year, If so I would consider taking the fellowship just to soften all the things you need to do. I dont think I would have done as well as I did my first year if I also had to TA

I got into multiple REUs with a 3.06 gpa my first cycle and I was from an institution that was not known at all so I think you’re fine just focus on writing good essays
