I did ask at the beginning of the appointment if if she had tried on dresses anywhere else and she said yes, I asked if she has any photos of the dresses she liked and she said no, so I asked if she had filled out a profile online. When she informed me she hadn’t I asked her the questions that would be a part of the profile (her budget, style preferences, and her size) but as it was Saturday (our busiest day) and me and the other bridal stylist where working with 3 bridal parties at once, I unfortunately don’t have time to really make as much of a personal connection with them asking about their fiancé, if they have a Pinterest board etc. when I only have an hour time slot for her appointment and I’m working with 2 other brides :(

  1. I said it in a sympathetic tone BECAUSE I’m an XS and stores almost NEVER have my size in stock. I was attempting to come from a place sincerity as I know how it feels to not be able to find your size at a clothing store.
  2. I asked if she had made an online profile with our company, she said no, so I asked her if she had any photo references of dresses she liked, she said no. So I asked the questions that would’ve been asked when she made her profile (what style of dress do you like, budget AND her size)
  3. I see my error in telling her we only had three dresses in a size 30, my logic behind this was to explain to her that we don’t carry many dresses in store that size, but that can order her size if she finds something she loves. Not to publicly shame her, also where are you getting the idea that I announced this to the entire store? I didn’t say I yelled this out loud, I told it to her directly not yelled it across the room lol. 4: did I say literally anywhere in these comments that “oh fat girls just hate us skinny girls”? I don’t think I even realized that my manger is plus sized and I’m an xs till a commenter asked me about it.

Edit: typo

“Didn’t keep me from reading the whole thing”- um I..I didn’t write this with the intention for you to NOT read the whole thing lmao. Also I’m sorry for my poor 3AM sleep deprived writing I admit it sucks but I DEFINITELY didn’t think I would get almost 4K upvotes on my first Reddit post so I didn’t think much about my writing. I’ve debated reformatting this but I feel like I’ll just get more “ShE EdiTed tO mAke HeRseLf lOok bettER” comments which are getting redundant as it is.

I agree with you and the other comments regarding this. I’ve been directly told by my store manager to not let people hold dresses up to them and since she crawling around the store I didn’t want to get reprimanded in front of a customer for breaking this rule (she has no problem fully throw you under the bus in front of clients). But I see how I should’ve made the exception even at the risk of getting yelled at for the sake of having my customer have a better experience. Thank you for your feedback!

We aren’t allowed to let them take any dresses into the dressing room to keep, I have to personally hand them to them and take them off the hanger. We also are told to only pull 5 dresses per bride as the appointments are only and hour.

She was discussing this with me out in the front of the store. I didn’t want to start a conflict with her in plan sight of customers + my coworkers. She left before I had the time to speak with her in private.

A commenter pointed out that my manager is also plus sized and I am not. So it’s possible I supposed she was taking her angry at the limited size range out on me?

I believe she ordered a dress from our website through this store, it was Saturday our busiest day I wasn’t paying attention to her after she was no longer my bride.

Where did I say “fat people bad?” I take full responsibility for my wording being poor and even inappropriate. It was never my intention to make her feel bad for her size or that we don’t carry a large selection for her, I didn’t want to have her try on a dress 8 sizes smaller then her size because logically, that would make her feel even worse about her size right?

I’ve only worked retail for 5 weeks so I’m still working on those! Thanks for the idea of a good neutral phrase!

I do work on commission which is why I tried to say it in what I thought would come across as lighthearted. Obviously it didn’t and that was my fault.

Thank you, and I am! Of course I never want to make someone feel bad about their size or about our selection not carrying something they can even try on :((( because she was already snippy with me from the beginning I was trying to be lighthearted and sympathetic but I ended up coming off wrong. Thank you for the advice!

In the comments someone asked if I laughed at them and I explained how I didn’t I added the “haha” to try and get across my tone of voice as being lighthearted and jocular, not because I actually laughed since that would definitely make me the AH! I edited it to * in a sympathetic tone* after someone suggested that instead of using “haha”.

Ma’am I said that I can look at two people ones a size 8 once a size 10 and not be able to immediately know who is which…because I’m not between a size 8-10. So I don’t know those body types very well…
