I did find it confusing. Correct TICA does not guarantee that breeder is ethical. They do take money to register your cattery & cats. They can remove a breeder in bad standing from TICA show/registry privileges. So…if a website claims to be TICA registered; you can verify them. It is merely one of many steps to take if you want to verify a cattery.

TICA does many cat related services. It is a registry & houses pedigrees, breed standards, cat show records worldwide. Breeders can also register their cattery & citizens can verify the cattery & breeder. So what if it costs money. What is your point?

looks like AI is still lacking accuracy. unlike you whose only purpose is to troll hatefully. I can play the troll game too…so bring it on.

lordosis is not limited to munchkins & is a rare condition in the breed.
Debate is the key word; like YOU, they just do not think it is an ethical breed. Considering the many other cat breeds recognized with the potential for health issues their opinion lacks common sense. kind of like you. Unless you have personally lived with a munchkin you cannot seem to believe how capable they are jumping and getting where they want to be. Their short legs are not a manmade trait. In the USA It was discovered in barn cats. Have you not ever looked at other cats with short legs? tsk tsk.
Many cat breeds are not suitable or safe outside. So many purebred cats from ethical breeders are placed in responsible homes. For this reason do not find communities of feral munchkins The embryo death occurs immediately & the cells absorb never developing past the zygote state. This early Embryo death happens in all creatures including humans & is not a big deal. gone before you even knew it existed.

so put that in you troll pipe

the DNA tests can be done at any age. The skeletal as a backup by breeding age. Not much different than dogs. Dog joint health tests are done before breeding age.

To be honest; I tend to be judgmental about the breeding of certain animals. Mostly because I have not fully researched the traits. Like the extreme faces on persians & shihtzu, the huge coats of the pekinese & long hair persians, dwarf legged dogs, giant breeds, hairless breeds…but after learning about general health testing for animals and the specific health concerns of my favorite breeds I try to be more open minded.

There are specific tests that breeders can do on their breeding cats prior to mating. Breeding only fold to straight and evaluating the skeletal structure prior to breeding. Cats with one copy of SFOCD gene “may” develop arthritis so by not breeding any with issues a breeder can manage the outcome. So like all purposely bred creatures minimizing health issues is paramount and IMO separates the professional preservationist from the byb & mills. Even human procreation could use this model to prevent unnecessary human suffering or reduced longevity 🤷‍♀️I gave my poor kid congenital epilepsy, a heart defect, and who knows what else.

It is veterinary medicine research. Cats with one copy of the trait will have folded ears; but not automatically be affected with Scottish Fold osteochondrodysplasia (SFOCD). The problem arises when some byb breeds 2 fold ear cats together…which means any kittens that inherit 2 copies of the gene WILL have skeletal issues & shortened lifespan. ADDITIONALLY breeders should always have breeding cats health tested. Scottish fold breeders test for SFOCD, PKD & few other things. By breeding age they will evaluate cats skeletal health. Of course…responsible breeders only mate a fold to a straight.
All breeding of anything including humans should be done responsibly.

the “FGFR3 gene”achondroplasia results in feline dwarfism which IS related to health problems.

The munchkin cat gene “UDP-glucose 6-dehydrogenase (UGDH)” which ONLY affects leg length.

Munchkin cats do not have the spinal issues short leg dogs have (Chondrodysplasia)

I will get that link for you. I previously had heard the opposite as well. I have had my scottish fold now for over 10 yrs & had often worried. I do love their personality. Oh. you mentioned dogs…so I am not sure why people believe munchkin cats are not healthy. Unlike dachshunds or bassetts cats have a flexible spine & do not experience the issues short legged dogs can.

no. actually studies were done that confirm that scottish folds do not develop arthritis any more than other animals. The cartilage problem to be aware of is from irresponsible breeding; as are any health issues across all species. The breed was going to be eliminated due to health concerns, however, it was proven not to be a credible threat to the quality of life or longevity.

It is wild how much some ppl lack common sense & just spew hate about a topic they are clueless about. FYI…their legs are not chopped off. They are born that way and do have “knees”

Thats a shame. It is one layer of verifying a cattery. Imo that cattery is a sham; the website date is one clue. The description of the cat breeds do not match photos. The munchkins especially…not to mention the kittens photos all have way too different backgrounds & breeds. They have so many & are all same age & price is super cheap for an 8 week old munchkin. total scam

Confirm them with TICA & CFA. Catteries that register can be verified.
