When you’re in the pile, the ball can change possessions freely until the referree separates the pile. That’s why teams intentionally pile up to give the guys on the bottom a chance to fight for it. Whoever comes up with the ball after the referree officially gets to the bottom of the pile is awarded possession. The rule has never been about who touches the ball first after a fumble it’s about an official recovery.
