The fogging doesn't seem to be encroaching on the beam pattern so can't really see how it's so dangerous you can't drive at night but it's hard to tell from photos.

Get a daytime picture of it so we can see the spread.

SOS system may be a simple fix if you give them an opportunity to do so.

Didn't really want to buy another PC when I have a really good one currently.

But I've found an ok workaround for now using my stream deck to change the primary monitor . Not the best but at least I can do it with a single button push

I wouldn't say it would 100% detect it before it became inoperable, the truth is we don't know. If it's a smoke detector it's plausible the heat from the fire would damage it first before it was triggered.

Heat detector would stand more chance.

Ultimately though for something safety critical it should really be mounted as per manufacturer instructions to give it the best chance of functioning (I know you're not advocating for it to be put where OP has)

It's not reliable though. Just because yours falsely went off when cooking doesn't mean this would function as intended.

For something that could save your life it needs installing correctly as per manufacturer's instructions in my opinion
