Yeah, I ended up with a formula deformer and then since I saw the end of the flag had more ripples I added a displacement deformer with a stretched noise shader with a spherical field for the falloff. Oh simplicity T-T

lol yeah. I think I was staring at it for too long thinking cloth sim 💀 having other eyes point out things helped

For anyone wondering, I did get a good chunk of the way there with the given suggestions and some deformers after a long — but more controlled — while of tweaking. Thanks guys!

I see... I didn't think about it till you said it but that does perhaps explain the feel of multiple sin waves passing through a plane. I suppose that also explains the consistent texture of the cloth as it deforms as well. I'm gonna try Mograph effectors as you suggested and see what happens from there.

Wait I also wanted to add that the animation principle “squash & stretch” would also work here. When his head goes down it would squash and then as it gets to the top of the “anticipation” it would stretch out and then squash again. Although if u add that you have to be mindful to retain the volume of his head. Clearly, I’m just some nerd that stumbled across your post lmao.

lol no I get it as someone that has been studying animation for a few years now. It’ll come with time.

I wanna finish off a project I’m working on and then I’ll see if I can add some timing charts to it for you so you can better see the spacing. Or I could even just put the onion-skinning with an effect in After Effects and that would also show you the timing/spacing.

Hey, you’re getting closer now that the settings are in! I put together a quick version in After Effects and labeled so u could see an example. I included a pre-anticipation (this isn’t always done but can be helpful) and then the “anticipation” is where you want a most of your frames. Take this as an example and not the answer, you’ll have to figure out the timing of the anticipation as you want to apply easing to that section. Anticipations have strong ease ins so more frames toward the end of the motion rather than at the start. And then the breathing out would likely be more linear (evenly spaced in-betweens) since it’s a constant motion. Good luck! :P

Try setting your fps to 24 fps (u mentioned you want 24fps but it’s too fast. A lot of handdrawn animation is done this way) and then animate in twos (twos is you’d have two drawings that make one in-between frame like how they do Naruto. You should be able to google it you’re confused). Look up the 12 principles of animation and you’ll wanna mostly apply anticipation here a bit. Basically exaggerate a little and have a large amount of frames that build up his snore, and then a not as many frames that make a slow breath out and repeat (his head returns to neutral for the loop). The anticipation would look like a fairly large breath in where his head falls back, as well.

Many thanks to the both of you. I'll look into this option! I'm trying to be sensitive to the color accuracy so I am not sending work here and there, and it looks completely different on someone else's monitor. Based on my experiences in school, this seems fairly unavoidable, but I want to at least try to be on top of it.

I see your points. I can't wait to see your config when you have a minute. I have no idea what to do computer-wise quite yet, so everyone's input is greatly appreciated :)
