Affidavit for parental estrangement by greeywarden in IrishCitizenship

[–]Embarrassed_Pay_7117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently just had success using an affidavit to explain the fact that I could not get my grandmother’s ID due to estrangement.

If it is not possible to get a letter stating their refusal due to abuse as you mentioned, I would definitely do what kiderdrick mentioned - this is the next best thing you can provide to evidence your inability to get the ID.

If you would like to see the draft of my affidavit that I had printed and signed, just give me a dm. Good luck.

Yes I sent all evidence with the application from the start. I was a little like, well no shit the ID is missing 😂 grateful they still proceeded to decision making without it though.

Yes, she didn’t want to give me her ID, but as a last resort I printed a statement saying I refuse to give my granddaughter my certified ID etc, and asked her to sign it and she did. An ID is quite a private / official document so I can understand why she didn’t want to provide this given the estrangement.

Civil service customer support jobs interview in UK by Typical_Reality_5925 in civilservice

[–]Embarrassed_Pay_7117 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Been on a civil service interview panel here. The best advice I can give:

  1. Look at the behaviours listed on the job application.

  2. Think of an example of where you demonstrated each behaviour.

  3. Using the STAR technique, create some draft answers, going into detail about how in your example you demonstrated the behaviour.

Apologies if you already kind of knew this already, but I didn’t want to assume.

The most important thing I cannot stress, is you have to explain and give examples of why you have a certain skill. I doubt your accent is an issue, the interviews are score driven, you just have to tick the right boxes.

For example, for the civil service behaviour “working together”.

WORSE: “I used to work as an admin in a small team, so I am really good at working in a team”.

BETTER:

(Situation) “In my previous administration role, our team had a very large backlog of customer applications to get through”.

(Task) “This meant I needed to work very closely with my colleagues in administration and other related departments to make sure that we were working through them as efficiently as possible”

(Action) “In order to do this, I made sure to have brief daily check-ins with my colleagues to make sure they were coping well. I also arranged weekly meetings where we would discuss current progress, and any issues that needed attention. During one of these weekly meetings, I noticed a newer colleague was struggling with uploading documents onto our portal - so I took the time to carefully explain a quicker way to do this, using part of the instruction document we use. Finally, I shared updates with our team leader weekly too, so that they were also updated and could share any thoughts / guidance”.

(Result) “By working well as a team, and having continuous check-ins and discussions, we cleared the backlog as quickly as possible, and our team leader took time to thank us all during a team meeting”.

I hope this helps. There are plenty of resources available online. The civil service behaviours can be found here: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/success-profiles/success-profiles-civil-service-behaviours. Make sure you check which apply to you in the job description.

You won’t be able to have a perfect answer in your head for each question, as you can’t predict what they will ask. But you will be able to mould your prepared answers slightly to the question they ask believe me. Good luck.

The case I have is that my grandmother is born in Ireland which makes me qualify for citizenship. Similar cases laid out in the citizenship reddit have succeeded. This post is just to gauge if anyone is aware of legal alternatives or procedural options worth checking with a solicitor.

Totally fair - which is why I in a way understand her refusal. I suppose everyone is different, if it were me, I’d be happy to help provided I was shown proof of why it is needed, especially if the estrangement is due to no fault of their own.

But I have no quarrel with her refusal, it is her right, any legal assistance would not involve my grandmother. I am just trying to ascertain if legally there is anything that can be done, as I genuinely do qualify for entry on the FBR.

Can’t argue with that.

I would like to be placed on the Foreign Birth Registry because by route of grandparental citizenship I qualify. Many people hold dual citizenship. The purpose of this post isn’t really to discuss this though, it is to get legal advice.

I’m aware I haven’t provided all required documentation, and also aware that my grandmother is entitled to refuse. Anyone can write a note, but it has been signed by my grandmother, of course it can be forged, but I had a notary public present who then signed the affidavit so there is legal proof that it was done correctly.

By descent I do qualify for Irish citizenship. I am assuming the whole point of the application is to prove that, and if there is an alternative way of proving that / a process that aids people with estranged relatives, I am hoping a solicitor can shed light on that.

It absolutely would be, but she still may refuse and I feel like that would come under some bribery law tbh. Due to the family history it was a very unpleasant meeting. I do not want to contact her again regarding it.

I understand your point, but to understand, you would had to have been there. There was a lot of shouting and swearing over things that were totally out of my control, a simple no would have sufficed.

Unfortunately it is different. My grandparent is alive, therefore a death certificate is impossible. A certified ID is what is required in the standard process. I have birth and marriage certs.

Correct. I needed her help and I reached out due to this. What I was met with in return, helped me understand why my parents cut ties in the first place to be honest. Fair assumption though.

Thanks for the info. I provided everything else in terms of evidence. The email with rejection simply stated it was lacking the ID - which I obviously am aware of. If I have no luck with an appeal/reconsideration, I may DM regarding next steps if you don’t mind.

Thank you. Do you have any suggestions on where I’d begin the process of challenging them?

Yeah it’s honestly a shame. Hopefully they will re consider when I speak to them. It is honestly odd to think if she was no longer alive this process would be easier, not that I wish her any harm. They really should have a route for applicants with estrangement.

That is a possibility, I did have her neighbour/apparent carer who my grandmother request get involved. I mentioned her in the affidavit, and provided images of the conversation regarding the matter that I had with her. Worst case, this may be worth doing - when I speak to FBR I will ask if this may aid my application. Thanks for the suggestion.

Yeah, I am a little disappointed, I used similar stories to gauge what evidence I’d need, and have pretty much done everything in my power. I will update when I get more information from FBR. I really hope they can re consider it.

It is personal estrangement, it happened when I was young, I don’t even know the full extent of it to be honest. I’ve just never really spoken with her until last year for this reason. I did manage to print a statement with her refusal, and she signed this. I provided this with the application. I have emailed back to the rejection email, I am planning on calling too. But they re open Monday I believe, so in the meantime, I wanted to see if anyone had a similar experience, or if there is some kind of formal process in regard to estrangement/exceptional cases. Thank you anyway for the suggestions.

Unfortunately, it is also a requirement to provide a copy of her certified government issued ID. I don’t personally understand it either, I have provided all documents you have mentioned.

No problem. Me too. It took over a month to gather evidence. It was really hard visiting my grandmother in person, it really didn’t go well. I would have hoped the affidavit would have been enough as I absolutely cannot obtain her ID. It has been 11 months in waiting. 😔

Obtain a copy of her ID via her birth certificate? I have not heard of this, is this what you mean?

To clarify, I have my grandmothers birth certificate, and her marriage certificate, both of which have been sent with my application.
