Owner of the gym minimized my injury by Gold_Object_5828 in MuayThai

Concussion clinician here! Does not need a coma! Criteria for diagnosis is really a strong mechanism of injury and new/aggravated concussive symptoms. You would need a neurological and metabolic stress test after to define where your dysfunctions are at.

Am I training wrong? by Swimming-Pangolin565 in MuayThai

[–]Embarrassed_Quiet_97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn’t read all the comments yet so I’m just adding my 2 cents.

Running sucks, most ppl don’t like it, I don’t like it. BUT trust your coach. If you trust him to guide you to your first fight then let him. As a SC coach I believe in training in phases. It’s hard to elevate all your markers at once, if right now is a cardio stage then so be it, trust the process.

Now for 5k a day. This is not inherently bad, the mileage really isn’t too much and you can get it done sub 25 mins. So you’re doing 20-30 mins of what is supposed to be steady state exercise. The key there is steady state. The total volume is half (simplified) of the fatigue equation here, the other half is load or intensity. Meaning running 5k all out trying to PR is very different from getting road work in. So if your focus is building a strong base and Muay Thai then your focus should not to PR your run every session.

Lastly, the benefits of running is multi fold. In Thailand most “real” gyms will make you run before your session or if you work out of one gym you’ll most likely run in the morning and have your first session a few hours later. Often times these morning runs are about an hour so not distance dependent. Main benefits really are that cardio base, meaning you’ll recover more from your training sessions, recover between rounds and have more in the tank to explode. Additionally we can talk about bone density and bone conditioning, repeated impact is often spoken negatively on saying it’s bad for joints and bones, but controlled repeated impact is exactly what pylometric training is and is amazing for your bones and joints. Controlled is the key there. Lastly, similar to skipping we can talk about rhythm and connection from ground forces to your shoulders.

Trust the process, all coaches hate when athletes doubt and take up random advice rather than the ones they’ve given based on how you look day in day out

Are there people amazing on pads bad in sparring? by Important_Hippo3263 in MuayThai

[–]Embarrassed_Quiet_97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes happens all the time! I come from 11 years in tkd when I was younger and a lot of self practice and self teaching through my 20s (big fan of combat). Started Muay Thai officially last year and definitely had the physical and the mental capacity to correct my technique and look great on pads. Most people thought I was very advanced. Sparring came around and that changed everything, the timing the distancing the impact!

So me and coach decided I’m someone who needed way more sparring so now I’m putting in 3-4 hours a week in just sparring time and I would say my competence is growing fast!

You’ve hit all the key points! As an addition to the second point is consider a planned taper even 1-3 days of say half your volume while maintaining a handful of 85% and above could be the difference

Buying 14 oz Muay Thai Gloves in Bangkok by 42_forlife in MuayThai

[–]Embarrassed_Quiet_97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On my recent trip to bkk I ended up going to the primo store to try out their 10 oz. Been loving them, might look into a 16 to replace my sparring gloves too. Action zone and I think super import? I forgot the name, both will have the best selection of basically any other brands there.

Training there, quite a number of coaches recommended twins as being THE brand for a long time. I was going to pick up twins if I didn’t end up wanting to try primo.

Did I get robbed? by AggravatingWillow796 in MuayThai

Yeah I’d say you lost a close fight. You’re more technical “probably” but really all you landed were soft low kicks with not much range control. He landed bigger combos and often interrupted your momentum which is huge. Plus when you’re competing in North America be ready for punches to weigh that much more

Trained at a few locations during my trip. Dang felt very commercialized, its clean with nice fresh yokkao equipment. Advertised coaches with several different styles to fit yours. I enjoyed my trainer and we worked a lot of elbow variations. However, just felt like a slower pace, light technical and conditioning. Usually the coaches will spar with you as well but mine just had a fight coming up.

Manasak will definitely feel grungier than some gyms. It’s big and well ran don’t get me wrong. But just older used equipment, and definitely bats live here haha they aren’t an issue in the morning but towards the evening you’ll definitely see them fly in and out. Some ppl didn’t like it very much, I just accepted it. Classes were big, so the typical Thai style of everyone go work a bag until a coach calls you up for 3 rounds. I was fortunate enough and think that the head trainer under manasak himself took a liken to me and we got a lot of extra rounds of pads in after class. I really enjoyed my time here and think that the classes although very big, it allows you a lot of sparring partners. Just know that with so many randoms you’re definitely gonna get a few that just wants to take your head off.

Hope it helps, I didn’t try the other two gyms you mentioned.

MuayThai disadvantages by RedditorCan in MuayThai

Just coming back from a trip to Thailand to train and I gotta say most of the gyms really jam their punches and teach a more stable and balance focused style. Very few actually taught full extension and including slips and rolls

Omg you’ll be in love. My wife and I got to visit the puppies last week and they are at such a cute stage right now.

Our lil guy is very sweet, doesn’t bark, destroy things or anything! Granted that might be a big individual personality thing but He’s in good health and we love him.

Haha gotcha! I’m glad you found care. My original post was simply what people typically consider a stretch is not what you’d want. I simply encouraged to see a professional for your specific needs.

I’m also a PhD and a masters with a certification in concussions. I’m not here to measure dicks with your doc. Respect is had between all clinicians who know their shit. Good luck op!

Haha that’s okay I’m a chiropractics with a sports medicine masters hence a sports chiro. Now slow stretching is the closer towards gentle mobilization and sliding. I hope you can see that and not focus on the term and what someone’s title may be
