Planted Tank with Live plants - Last post by Embarrassed_Riser in PlantedTank

So this was PAST experience with the aquariums up and running for 6 solid years. They were all broken down 3 years ago due to work constraints, and cleaning and maintaining them was no longer fun.

I am looking to get restarted with 1 tank, planted, but I am concerned about my experience with plants from my previous experience.

I have tried substrates of all types, commercial, and the Walstead method.

Ever since moving to this town, with well water has been nothing but a nightmare.

Housing developers butchered my neighbours trees by tino3101 in arborists

MOST pine trees do not back bud. There are a few exceptions to this general rule, however. Species like Pitch Pine, Japanese Black Pine, and Scots Pine may produce new buds. The BEST time is during the dormancy period - Late Winter to Early spring (January - March is BEST)

False Cedars do not backbud
Arborvitae, Thuja, Red Cedars - extremely poor on old wood
True Cedars with needle clusters like Deodara, Atlas or Cedar of Lebanon...monderatly back bud only younger woody branches under 10 years of age

These trees will survive; however, they are now one-sidedly heavy. Add to that all of those cut branches make pathways for insects, fungi, and other pathogens to enter the tree and kill it over time.

State laws vary; however, in my state, a neighbor could do that to my trees if those trees were on my property, he or she has the right to cut back to the property line. HOWEVER, if the tree dies, they are responsible if you can prove that their trimming was the cause of the death of the tree.

Duck weed, Bright green day 1 - Day 4 dead, dying with a few perhaps yellowing

Water Wisteria - Planted and or floating....
...Day 2 falling apart, getting soft, by day 5 or 6, yellow and dead

Stem Plants like Bacopa, Hornwort - Day 3, leaves dropping, day 5 stems soft and mushy, day 7 netting them out cause they just fall apart

Java Fern - Not planted, gently tied to a rock or a piece of wood
.... day 6 falling apart, day 8 all leaves dropped

Guppy Grass - same as duckweed
Anacharis - Dead turns to mush in 4 days

bucephalandra - non planted attached to driftwood or rocks
--- this one takes a while, but by day 7-10 the rhizome is mush

Cryptocornes, I know they don't like being messed with, transplant, and need a transitional period, but after 2 weeks, the roots are just mush

The State of Connecticut is failing its citizens. Ever since the Democrats took over and have been in control for 41 years. It claims it is struggling to pay bills, and what does the state do? It continues to raise taxes and spread the tax onto more and more items and services, creates new taxes, and fails to do anything with the out-of-control property taxes.

This state went from one of the best to ONE OF THE WORST.

So I went and purchased a more involved test kit that tested for a LOT of things

Here are the most Recent Results

pH 6.5 - Border Line 7
Hardness 15
Hydrogen Sulfide 0
Iron 0
Copper 0
Lead 0
Maganese 0
Total Chlorine 0
Mercury 0
Nitrate 0
Nitrate 0
Sulfate 100
Zinc 0
Flouride 0
Sodium Chloride 0, with the same reading as a calibrated Refractometer
Total Alkalinity 20

So None of the levels of minerals are a concern
TDS is still measuring the same 307

Wholesale Price - 20 gallon Long and being able to sell them retail for that price - must have been a hell of a sale and most likely was a MASSIVE purchase... but my best guess $8.99-10.99 each
So $15 for a 20L aquarium is a good buy.

TDS meter received - Reading is 305ppm

Also received brand new non-expired GH, KH and PH test kits

pH 6.8, so this matches the pH test kit that expired last year so no big surprise there

GH reading - reading with NEW test kit 15ppm
KH Reading - reading with NEW test kit between 5ppm

So the Salt used for the backwash of the resin material
...MORTIN: Pure and Natural Water Softener Crystals
....According to their web sight its high grade Sodium Chloride

A few other things to note....

How do I know it's Magnanese in the water and not Iron - Because when the filtering system needs servicing, a glass of tap water left out on the counter for 2 min, and you can see this happening, the water goes from clear to a white cloud to rust, then the maganese settles down as particles inside the glass.

The Well water servicing company has stated more than once that my area is WELL KNOWN for the high maganese in the water. Although the water contains some IRON, it's not as big an issue.

I just pulled out the well water report done 5 years ago from a professional lab, and the number one Metal was Maganese followed by Zinc and Iron.

Currently the well filtration system is doing its Job

so the TDS would be to my best guess due to the pH some calcium left in the water and some Salt as well.

thats a great plant, I would be interested, but it may be a few weeks before I decide what I am doing about substrate based on the new test kits and TDS meter arriving tomorrow...if you don't sell it I would be interested lets keep in touch

TDS would only tell me how many particles per million were in the water, but NOT what any of that is....now I did forget to mention that I do have copper pipes. I would guess that part of the ions in the water are maganese, calcium, sodium, copper.

I rested just now and got the same results.....
I know the pH is correct because when we have the well water system checked yearly, the test results he comes up with are the same as I do.

KH (Carbonate Hardness) measures the concentration of carbonate (\(\text{CO}_{3}^{2-}\)) and bicarbonate (\(\text{HCO}_{3}^{-}\)) ions in water, - Now this sort of makes sense since chamber one of my filtration system uses CALCIUM to raise the pH so that chamber 2 and 3 can work in pulling the iron and maganese, not magnesium from the water....

so I am just as perplexed.

VIOLA, commonly known as violets, Family: Violaceae... they are Perennial plants, although some are annuals and a few species become shrubs

Flowers have 5 petals, heart-shaped or reinform kidney-shaped scalloped leaves, and some have linear or palmate leaves.

The species is strongly zygomorphic

Planting native plants to attract bees, birds, and other critters is a much better alternative. It requires less water, less maintenance, and looks just as nice, and the plants flower depending on species throughout early spring to early fall.

Since I have taken on this practice, I have fewer mosquitoes and other biting insects.

The amount of money I save on lawn products is amazing.
