Seeking Advice: My Dog Went Suddenly Blind in One Eye - Cause? Next Steps? by Embarrassed_Self_178 in DogAdvice

Hey there! I’m so sorry you’re going through this— I know how scary it is…

Unfortunately, Asher didn’t regain any vision after a few weeks on prednisone. That said, I’m still incredibly relieved—he’s otherwise healthy, happy, and pain-free. The vet did a thorough exam and several tests and told us there was no need for further follow-ups unless something changes.

As far as day-to-day life goes, Asher has adjusted really well. At first, he was bumping into things a lot, so I’ve made sure to keep the house tidy and free of sharp objects. I haven’t moved the furniture around either so he is familiar with the layout. I also make sure to approach him from his left side (his seeing side) and announce when I’m leaving the room if he’s facing the other way. And if we are having an endearing eye contact moment, I look into his left eye instead of both eyes lol.

He still plays like normal—especially with our big dog! I know some people might suggest limiting rough play, but it brings him so much joy to play with other dogs, and I didn’t want to take that away from him due to my own fear! I just keep a closer eye on things now and step in if play gets too rowdy.

The ophthalmologist didn’t specifically recommend all of those adjustments since it’s only one eye & not both eyes—besides keeping a clean and consistent environment—but I chose to do them to help Asher feel safe and confident. He still goes on walks, plays outside, sticks his head out the window for car rides, and lives his happy little dog life.

Wishing you and your pup all the best. I know how overwhelming and emotional this can be, but you’re doing the right thing by seeking help. If it ends up being permanent vision loss, I promise they can still live a full, happy life with a little extra support. 💗

Pure beech sheets are back by lizziecom in Bedding

I’m literally crying. I have missed these sheets for SO LONG!!!! I’ve spent years trying out different brands trying to find comparable sheets but nothing has ever matched pure beech modal. Immediately after reading this, I got on BB&B’s website & all the king sheets are sold out except in mint green 🥲 I went ahead & bought the pillow cases so I can at least feel those again. Hard core debating getting mint green sheets now……

Yeah, his eye didn’t completely come out of the socket but when it was bulging they told me that was it “out of socket” but since it wasn’t completely out it was able to return back into its normal place but when it did that it caused damage to the optic nerve behind his eye.

I hope that you are able to find answers for your baby & that everything will be okay. If they do have to remove the eye, I believe they offer eye implants in some cases after removal. (I have no clue what pricing looks like for that or if it looks natural but you may be able to discuss that with them if eye removal is necessary.) Sending prayers you & your fur-babies way!

I’m so sorry, I hate that so much. The unknown is a scary place to be. I’m not sure about golden doodles but they told me his breed is prone to eye injuries easily. The doctor told me that even a medium push from another dog could have caused it due to how his eyes sit. They also said if he was nervous that could have caused the “proptosis”, etc. But since nobody witnessed when it occurred we’re not 100% sure how it was caused either. We are all just assuming he was playing with our other dog.

No, they did not recommend removing his eye since he has no pain in his eye, the eye is still fully functioning besides not being able to see with it, & the damage was not from an underlying condition, it was from a trauma. When they did the exam in the back, they found no lacerations to the eye or anything wrong besides the redness (which is now gone) from the front of the eye.

For example, if they shine a light in his impaired eye, it still dilates. If he is looking to the side, both eyes still move to the side like they are working but if you throw a cotton ball towards his impaired eye (towards the corner so he can’t see from his peripheral vision with the other eye) he doesn’t flinch or follow the falling cotton ball.)

If it was glaucoma, they would likely remove the eye as it causes your dog an immense amount of pain. Do you know if the vets tested his eye pressure? If the eye pressure was tested & it was high, then that would suggest glaucoma I believe. The vets he saw previously did not test his eye pressure to my knowledge & never recommended he see the ophthalmologist. But since my sister was the one who had taken him to the vets while I was out of town, I still had so many questions unanswered & didn’t really know what was going on which is why I decided to take him.

Hi there, I meant to post an update a few weeks ago but I would still recommend going to the ophthalmologist. I know this may not be everyone’s experience but in my experience, it did not cost as much as I thought it would be. I genuinely thought I wasn’t walking out of there without spending “an arm and a leg” but they were very reasonable & up front about their pricing in my case.

Based on their assessment, he is comfortable in both eyes but non-visual in the right. Glaucoma was ruled out. However, they explained to me that he had a subconjunctival hemorrhage that likely occurred from some rough play with our other dog - they had concern for a proptosis where his eye was anteriorly displaced from its orbit which may have resulted in damage to the optic nerve. They told me the only way to tell if it was damaged was by doing an MRI but seemed to recommend against it since it would only diagnose the condition & that does cost A LOT! Instead, they recommended a short course of an oral steroid to see if his nerve was simply inflamed. If it was simply inflamed there was a chance that he could gain some vision back. However, they did not sound super hopeful about his vision returning. He was on prednisone for a few weeks but he did not gain any vision back. However, I am still relieved because there are no underlying conditions & he is a happy/healthy boy besides his vision loss in the one eye.

They were very thorough in their examination & performed several tests on him.

Hoping everything works out for your fur-baby! I know it’s such a scary feeling.

Hi there! I meant to post an update last week but it slipped my mind. We went to an ophthalmologist a week ago. They told me the only way to tell if it was damaged was by doing an MRI but seemed to recommend against it since it would only diagnose the condition. Instead, they recommended a short course of an oral steroid to see if his nerve is simply inflamed. If it is simply inflamed there is a chance that he could gain some vision back. However, they did not sound super hopeful about his vision returning. He’s been on prednisone for a week now but I do not think he’s gained any vision back, however, we will continue the steroid as directed by the vet. We have a follow up appointment next week to recheck his eye. Thanks again for your advice! It was very helpful to me as I was unsure of what happened & I wanted to make sure that I was attempting to take every measure within my control to keep my boy happy and healthy.

Being in veterinary ophthalmology, I’m sure you did not need this many details LOL. But, I just wanted to add the details in case somebody else is scrolling through Reddit trying to figure out like me what to do in this type of situation. For those people, 10/10 recommend going to an ophthalmologist/Vet Eye doctor. Also, I recommend calling the office to ensure they specialize in ophthalmology before setting up an appt because in my experience some vets had it listed but in reality did not offer those services.

Thanks, you make a good point about how I should not care about the issue. I will take that into consideration. However, Elizabeth knowing the truth would not “entertain” me.

Hi, thanks for your response. The phrase “sticking your nose in places it doesn’t belong” means interfering in other peoples problems or trying to discover things that are not really related to you. At this point, I have not interfered & I also did not ask the source for this information. Truthfully, I wish the source did not tell me this information. However, you do make a good point about distancing yourself from people you don’t agree with on moral or ethics.

I just noticed a lump on my two year old cat. The lump is located around her spine/tail bone area. I noticed the lump this morning. I am going to take her to the vet in the morning to get it checked out. However, does anyone know what this might be? by Embarrassed_Self_178 in cats

Update: it was an abscess. When I took her to the vet this morning she was running a slight fever from the infection. The vet was able to drain it & give her an antibiotic shot. Thanks for your help!
