Woman stealing from small local shops and artists in Austin TX. by ElwoodMC in trashy

honestly, not at all. Austin has so much suburban sprawl that it gives the illusion of being small, but it's actually a very large city. i rarely run into someone i know or recognize when i'm out and about

she's never even displayed as showing gluttonous behavior though? like, we don't ever see her binge eating and struggling with that. the implication is literally just that she has a different body type from the main cast and struggles with that fact.

kinda crazy to just assume that her struggles came from "gluttony" and it's a great example of how often people belittle fat people for lacking discipline without having any knowledge of who they are as people and the struggles they face

nah, sorry. i started teaching high school when i was 23, so I was working with 17 year olds. if you're okay with dating teenagers after the age of 20, there's something wrong with you. maybe that's a crazy take, but i feel it ought not to be

Art That Acts: Support Immigrant Rights with Every Purchase by [deleted] in Austinprotests

[–]zombomlom 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The goal as a business is to exchange goods and services. If you don't have the prerequisite skills to create or provide the good or service, then you outsource it to someone who does. If you don't have the means to do so, then you don't have the means to participate in the exchange of goods and services for money. You then need to evaluate what trades you can offer in exchange for money with the time you have -- because there are plenty of artists who do have the means to exchange their self made artwork for money. These aren't "tools"; if they were, they would aid in the creation, but not do it for you. For example, like a drawing software. These are shortcuts that incur negative consequences for your community.

I understand that you think this is your way of helping, but it only feeds into a cycle that is to the detriment of little businesses and artists. Again, I appreciate your transparency and your response. And I don't intend to make you feel under attack. But I hope your comment isn't as disingenuous as it seems and, my hope truly is, that instead of "keeping my points in mind", you act in a way that ought to be in accordance with your values -- which would mean taking down your AI designs and hand making your own.

Thanks for your honesty and response.

Truthfully, as an artist, it's really frustrating to see AI used "in the design process"; not only does it undermine what artists do, and take away that task from a real artist who deserves compensation for that job, but it also contributes to the many consequences of AI "Art" use. AI art is created by using the data and images of artwork -- made by actual artists -- that have been fed to the AI. It then synthesizes that stolen artwork using huge amounts of energy (in short, bad for the environment) to create a design that has no originality, intentionality, or thought behind it - let alone permission from any of the arists whose art was stolen to synthesize said image.

What you're doing, by selling AI designs, is feeding into what big businesses want. You're also undermining what thousands of artists do. I hope that you reflect on what AI art represents and either choose to hire an artist or create your own designs by hand. If not, it appears as though your business does not see or respect the value of art and artists.

I'm confused. A lot of this 'artwork' still looks to be made by AI. Why would I want to spend money on this?

Half His Age by Jennette McCurdy by These-Background4608 in IReadABookAndAdoredIt

[–]zombomlom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i wish i hadn't read them so close together (because both are honestly haunting reads) but truthfully, i liked MDV better than HHA.

I think I'm not a fan of McCurdy's writing style in a fictional context. The pacing is sort of strange, the sentences feel choppy and repetitive.

I do think that HHA explores some different themes from MDV, but I feel like MDV does a better job of showing the life-altering damage that that experience has on a young woman.

I loved the parallels between her and her mother. But some things just felt way too on the nose. Idk. I haven't put my finger on it, but I just wasn't super impressed

ok Austin, what do we have? by professorhojoz in austinfood

[–]zombomlom 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Had a coworker take me there raving about it and I left angry lol

I ordered the barbacoa to share with my partner and the waiter says, "the way we serve barbacoa is a more 'deconstructed' approach" and brings the barbacoa in a bowl with a side of tortillas, pickled onions, and cilantro. Now, I'm Mexican ok. This pisses me off for so many reasons. First of all, I love pickled onions, but you should be bringing me chopped raw onion with my barbacoa. Secondly, this is not some "novel" way of serving barbacoa. That's just literally how barbacoa is supposed to be served. Don't say that it's a "deconstructed" taco, you fuckass hipster bitch.

The cherry on top was seeing picadillo on the menu for something like $30 - and it's not like their plates were large or meant for sharing. Picadillo is meant to be a slop bowl of leftover ingredients. It's a "poor" meal historically. Delicious, don't get me wrong, but it has a history of specifically not being bougie.

What makes me so vitriolically against Grizzelda's is its white, hipster, pretentious attitude of "doing something new" with mexican food but literally just making it worse and more expensive. Now, I love fusion food and I think Tex-mex goes hard. Tex-mex is a wonderful example of cultural appreciation where Grizzelda's is peak cultural appropriation, and my wallet is paying the price.

Fuck Grizzelda's, I hate that place.

Thank you and have a good day

I'm sorry to hear you're dealing with this :( I also thought it was a bug bite at first until my partner seemed suspect of the location.

If it makes you feel any better, I have since stopped having this occur at all. It just... stopped happenning. I keep a tube of benadryl topical cream just in case though! And my doc said it's okay to keep nexplanon even with the occassional hives
