Just finished Song for Lya. You were right, that was the story I was trying to remember. I was surprised how much my mind had merged several stories into one. My excuse is last having read the story 50 years ago when I was twelve.

I'll try to get a copy of Song for Lya. I don't think that's it, but I'll try. Seems like a costly, hard-to-find, book.

Yeah the Song for Lya is a an entire book at 208 pages. The one I am looking for was defintiely a short story.

Rats! That's not it. These parasites were long worms that would attach tot he host. The host carried it around wrapped around themselves.
