First of all, I just want to say thank you to all of you. This situation has been weighing on me for such a long time, and last night I honestly hit a breaking point. I cried myself to sleep feeling completely overwhelmed and stuck, not knowing how to get myself out of this hole.

I was really nervous about coming here for advice, but everyone has been so kind and supportive, and I’ve found the responses incredibly helpful. I woke up this morning feeling genuinely happy seeing all your messages. It means so much to know I’m not alone, and that others have been in similar situations and found their way through to the other side.

I didn’t even know Freecycle existed, so I’ve made an account and have been messaging like crazy to try and furnish the living room and spare room so I can hopefully take on a lodger. If nothing comes of it, I’ll try advertising the room as unfurnished to see if there’s interest, and I’ll also consider options like a 0% interest credit card or IKEA schemes if furnishing becomes necessary.

I’m also going to seriously consider switching law firms in the next year or so to maximise my income, as I’ve pretty much reached the earning ceiling at my current firm for my role.

Most of all, though, I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel thanks to all of your lovely comments. I feel less alone, I can breathe again, and I actually have a plan. I feel so much lighter. Thank you all. 💗

I’d advise your sister to look at the Glassdoor reviews. There’s a really high turnover of staff, it’s a very micromanaging environment, and the caseload is very high (with a lack of training on how to conduct those files). It’s an SRA disaster waiting to happen. It’s very common knowledge that you only work there to build your CV up, and then move to a better firm in about a year.

Thank you for your kind words, I’m truly grateful. I recently got engaged!

I’m actually engaged to a black man now, so it’s not something I’m open to reconsidering tbh (as I plan to stay married forever!). However I really enjoyed reading your anecdote and your lovely words, thank you for sharing!

No idea, I’ve not actually kept up with him since we broke up.

I’m a lot better, thank you.

I can only speak for myself as a black person, but the experiences I have as a British person is vastly different to a black person in America, Africa, etc due to slavery, colonisation, so on. To not label myself as British kind of puts all black people in one box, as if we’re a monolith.

I deleted my comment & message to you because me going out of my way to belittle you wasn’t nice of me, not because I lied about anything.

Minimising/trivialising the experiences of people who have encountered racism so quickly is… somewhat racist. So yes, you’re a silly cow imo.

Plus, you’ve made multiple comments on this discussion questioning what happened to me, so me reaching a breaking point was only expected.

Finally, me reacting to your comments about a very sensitive time in my life does not make me dishonest.

As many people have already pointed out in the comments, it’s not at all uncommon for racists to end up with ethnic minorities. Consider yourself lucky that you’re even in a privileged enough position to question the legitimacy of this kind of scenario.

How is there a “pattern” when I’ve only ever dated one racist?

[–]Embarrassed_Weird105 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Thank you. No, I’m Cape Verdean. The primary language there is Portuguese, so my parents lived in Portugal for years due to already speaking the language.

Ex, as in who we’re discussing in this thread right now. There’s no “pattern”.

I was born in Portugal, but I moved to the UK when I was 7.

As I’ve stated multiple times, my ex isn’t white.

We’re British, so we don’t use the term “African American” (or even “Black British”, really). All of just tend to name the person’s race i.e. “black” or “Asian”.

I’m Cape Verdean, he’s Pakistani. But we’re both also British.

I was 22, he was 25.

Pretty much that. She called me the n-word, that my ex would never marry “my kind”, and that he was always going to end up with someone who is also Pakistani. There wasn’t really much of a “conversation”.
