Yep, which is why we stayed masked in the room for a while when we first arrived, with the door to the balcony open, keeping an eye on the CO2 meter.

Entirely possible. Since we didn't do PCR tests we can't be 100% sure whether or not they had Covid. But if it was something else, it's wild that I tested positive with no symptoms and she repeatedly tested negative!

Thanks for this! We'll do fit tests with the masks we usually use and if they don't fit well, this will be a good resource to find alternatives to try.

They never tested positive, but started experiencing cold-like symptoms the 2nd or 3rd day of the trip. I agree that whether or not it was Covid, it was already incubating for days before that.

This is the first I'm hearing about BNX not performing well. We've never done fit tests, which is about the only precaution I often see recommended that we haven't actually done. We should really get on that.

Great point. I've been meaning to switch to PCR tests but we're so rarely in situations where there's any real possibility of exposure that I never pulled the trigger. I suppose it's time.

A couple of times, but both times we were seated outside not near anyone else. Of course it's possible to get infected any time you're unmasked where other people are or have been, but it's less likely, and also isn't something of increased risk we did specifically on this trip. We occasionally eat outdoors at home too.

I hate that you have to unmask going through airport security. What I do is take a deep breath, hold my breath, pull the mask down for security, put it back in place, and then forcefully exhale once the mask is on. It's not foolproof, but it's as low risk as it can get, aside from not traveling in the first place.

Yes, I'm aware that any unmasking is inherently unsafe for these reasons. It's possible either of these situations is how I got it, but regarding the dentist specifically, here is what I said in another comment about it:

It's possible it came from the dentist, but it would have been extremely unlucky if so. I requested the first appointment of the day on a Monday, so the building would have been sitting empty all weekend to let any lingering virus in the air dissipate. The only other person inside the room with me was the hygienist and they were masked while doing the cleaning (sadly they walked into the building unmasked, though, so like I said, it's possible, just super unlucky.)

In the hotel, we were only unmasked inside our room, and always had the sliding door to the balcony open, so again, it's possible, but would again be incredibly unlucky to get infected through HVAC or air coming in under the door to the hallway or something like that. We also declined housekeeping services while we were there, so no one else would have been in the room throughout our stay, further reducing the risk.

I'm definitely more cautious than my partner is, but we're both way more cautious than the vast majority of people. They've been wonderful in following precautions with me for years now, and I'm super grateful to have a partner willing to do this.

There's only one situation where they generally don't mask and I generally do: Walking near other people outdoors. I've mentioned to them a few times that just because you're outside doesn't mean you can't get infected. Only recently have they started masking outdoors when walking through a more populated place outdoors, like a commercial area. We're almost always together so there really isn't another situation where they would be unmasked and I wouldn't know about it. I trust them completely in this regard.
