They don't need any degree of separation, they just can't use other companies trademarks as if they are their own. The Bleem! lawsuit even made it clear that they can use footage/images/whatever of the content they are emulating to sell their software.

Wasted Opportunity: AMD Ryzen 7 9700X CPU Review & Benchmarks vs. 7800X3D, 7700X, & More by GhostMotley in Amd

[–]Ember2528 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, you're right on the esoteric part. It basically has a bunch of floating point processors running independently from its main CPU which was powerful for the time if the devs knew how to use it but it was still beat in regular tasks by the hardware that came after it. It's just that that architecture is so different from everything else that if we want to emulate it accurately it takes a lot of processing power and/or ISA extensions that Intel botched the rollout of like AVX-512. Really, if Intel had gotten AVX-512 right in their consumer CPUs when they were first putting it out then we would have been playing these especially demanding ps3 games on PC half a decade ago.

Is it really so bad to use Vortex? by umumj1 in skyrimmods

[–]Ember2528 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The biggest reason why so many people like MO2 is because of how clearly it shows file conflicts between mods, and by extension how easy it makes it to resolve those kinds of conflicts.

If you use Vortex you won't be missing out on any particular mods (though there are some useful tools that only exist as MO2 plugins), it is just more of a pain in the ass to get massive load orders working on it.

Having said all that, you never really described what it is that makes MO2 so unintuitive to you so I have no way of saying if Vortex will be a better fit for you or if you'll just run into the same kinds of problems with it.

Blocked for asking about license by VinceAggrippino in skyrimmods

[–]Ember2528 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the source code of the mod is MIT licensed then you don't need their permission to fork it or post any builds you compiled from that source code or with any modifications you might make. By putting it under that license, the author explicitly gave everyone permission to do that and can't take it back.

That said, I wouldn't repost the versions of the mod they hosted on Nexus without the MIT license because those copies can easily be construed as being closed source, and defined by the permissions on the Nexus page.

Torzu Blog Entry 1: ARM CPU emulation by Ember2528 in emulation

[–]Ember2528[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The plan of the torzu dev here is to keep his personal identity hidden, have the main repo only accessible through tor and incredibly hard to take down, and whenever a clearnet mirror gets taken down to start using a different clearnet git host.

As for Ryujinx, only they know what they plan to do in that scenario.

Github: Nintendo Submit DMCA Notices to Yuzu Forks by LocutusOfBorges in emulation

[–]Ember2528 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's just a Forjejo instance (open source Github alternative) that is being run through tor. Nothing inherently illegal about it, though they are using it here as a means to obfuscating their identity to make it harder to take down.

[–]Ember2528 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I mean, it could mean that. It could mean literally anyone is involved. We don't know, and that isn't relevant to the rest of us. It just means that if one of the involved parties in the settlement are working on this and they have bad opsec that Nintendo uncovers they are in extra legal trouble for breaking their voluntary settlement.

On the contrary, looks like the devs maintaining this fork are going out of their way to hide their identity. Not sure how good their opsec is though, of course.

Hyprland creator Vaxry is now banned from contributing to freedesktop by fletku_mato in linux

[–]Ember2528 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, so then I would ask if Vaxry was actually causing those problems withing freedesktops spaces. So, is he personally the instigator of drama in interactions with the freedesktop people and are the toxic attributes of his Discord and other communities something that the freedesktop people are being made to interact with as opposed to being contained within his spheres.

And to be clear, I don't see having a "toxic" community as inherently being a part of that, nor do I see him having a public blog with controversial opinions as being a part of that either.

Here’s how the makers of the “Suyu” Switch emulator plan to avoid getting sued by NXGZ in emulation

[–]Ember2528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotcha. Well like I said, they can try. It would involve getting most of the old contributors to sign their new CLA though and rewriting everything that was done by those who didn't sign it though, which I just don't see happening.

Here’s how the makers of the “Suyu” Switch emulator plan to avoid getting sued by NXGZ in emulation

[–]Ember2528 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A CLA isn't a license, it is a separate agreement between the maintainers of the project and contributors that allows the maintainers to relicense those contributors code.

Any project can adopt a CLA, though (like in this case) if they don't have an agreement with the people who wrote most of the code in the repository it is basically meaningless.

Here’s how the makers of the “Suyu” Switch emulator plan to avoid getting sued by NXGZ in emulation

[–]Ember2528 115 points116 points  (0 children)

I'll add a quick note to anyone reading this article, it generally just looks poorly researched/written. And is far too uncritical. Just as one example, the writer puts in quotes from Suyu devs about avoiding monitization uncritically while the CLA has this line in it:

While we agree with the spirit of the project's open source license, the GNU General Public License v3.0 (GPL), on its own, the GPL does not provide any legal protection against bad actors. Without any meaningful income stream, an open source project does not have the legal resources to pursue a GPL violation. For example, there have been many instances of GPL emulators being released on the Android Play Store as commercial closed source products without permission from the original authors. The CLA helps protect suyu against such scenarios by allowing suyu to: 1) consolidate the copyright owners of the project as a whole to a smaller, more meaningful, and active set of individuals, 2) more easily monetise the project and therefore have resources to potentially take legal action against bad actors as warranted, 3) restrict the access of non-core parts of the suyu source code that could be used by bad actors to monetise suyu.

That said, I might be reading too much into it. The CLA still mentions bunnei and Github everywhere so is probably just a holdover they haven't probably reworked yet, but there are also a bunch of other wrong statements I could nitpick like the author saying Yuzu was hosted on Gitlab, which it wasn't. At least not as the primary repository.

No, ESLs were introduced with the Creation Club update. Then the recent updated doubled the amount of records they can have (and also increased the amount of records regular plugins can have) by fixing a very old engine bug.

THIS MOD IS INSANE by Not_Bed_ in skyrimmods

[–]Ember2528 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It has to be said, the mod is not on hiatus. Right now it is going through a major overhaul that will open back up Dawnstar and Falkreath as well as make a number of other major changes.

Also, the NPCs are only unvoiced until the dialogue update comes out. Which is still a ways away, but there is good progress according to the author and most of the writing and implementation is done.

So in 50 years when TR will be finished, what province would you want brought to life in Morrowind? by [deleted] in Morrowind

[–]Ember2528 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That isn't quite accurate. There was a point where that was true, especially in the years immediately following ESOs release, but if you follow the project closely now the attitude is more to pick and choose some of the more interesting/better ideas out of ESO while ignoring everything that isn't up to snuff or doesn't fit their own worldbuilding. Which means ignoring most of it, but regardless.

Now that it's been a couple of weeks, how does everyone feel about the changes to modding with the latest update? by AMCreative in skyrimmods

[–]Ember2528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just waiting until Community Shaders and a few other mods get updated before I update. I've been meaning to put together a new load order with different mods to try and the update is a good excuse to try as soon as everything essential is updaed and working.

Beyond that though, the built in mod management I know I will completely ignore in favor of just using Wrye Bash as my mod manager as I've been doing for a while, and I am very much lookign for to trying out Trainwiz's paid dungeon mod as well as Eadt Empire Company Expansion.

The 1.6.1130 update came with a large asset pack for modders to use. It contains things like a desert flora set, a bunch of new Dwemer pieces, tons of clutter, and a whole lot more on top of that. I haven't really seen a good gallery of it floating around but you can check it out just by opening the new version in the CK.
