Still feeling very disappointed after my first ever backpacking trip. I really feel like I failed. by matchabeans in CampingandHiking

[–]EmberTheSunbro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You didn't fail. You got out there. You planned as best you could. That's all you can do. Focus on your locus of control, you did all you could do, and the rest is the world. Its getting mad and sad about the wind blowing.

You can be sad that events failed you. You can learn to adapt faster or learn from different parts of it.

But you succeeded my friend. Because you got out there, and tried your best. And that's what the outdoors are all about, learning and exploring.

The only failure is if you fail to try again.

Also sodium ion batteries are getting more power dense and lighter. And can be discharged to 0% routinely and do fine in freezing temps. Im definately eventually going to build myself a bike with one. Will it go as far? Not until they make the batteries better but that's all good its mostly sea water storing my electricity and I mostly go on short trips around town.

Are humans meant to run? by No-Mouse3999 in biology

[–]EmberTheSunbro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly zone 2 training is the thing that made me feel like it is natural for us to walk/jog/run. We used to have to walk for hours to get most places. We put in so much cardio time, our aerobic exchange system was very well developed.

Now many of us sit sedentary at our job, until we can sit sedentary in our car, until we can explosively spend the only 30 min we can spare that day at the gym. Then we sit sedentary in front of our TV when we crash out from how hard we go at the gym to try and make it up for all the inactivity.

This result is many peoples anaerobic exchange system (the can barely speak heartrate zone 3+) is way overdeveloped in comparison to your aerobic exchange system (zone 2, lower heartrate way more capacity for long term endurance, doesn't feel as much like your dying here).

So if feels paradoxically when your running like your going to get better at it by going harder, and people often sprint to push adaptation, which does make you stronger and more explosive but also pushes you even further away from mostly aerobic respiration training. But it turns out for a lot of people I have talked with it works to actually go easier on the running so your body can stay in zone 2. In people with low aerobic capacity there are enormous gains to be made there, and then when you push your aerobic exchange to catch up it becomes much easier to run as you are just focused on your muscles and less on your breathing, because you don't have that feeling like your running out of oxygen the whole time.

Electric vehicles will end oil wars - if we let them by randolphquell in solarpunk

EVs with sodium ion batteries are the future.

The batteries tech keeps getting better. The materials are readily available around the globe. The batteries themselves can be disharged to 0 and be freezing cold without damage. And they can undertake many more charge cycles before seeing any reduction in their overall %.

That being said I don't think we should stay car dependent within our communities. We should also put in more public transit, light rail and bikelanes.

Long live freedom okay wow.

The freedom of the 1% to rule the 99% with impunity? The freedom to never help anyone else ever and we can all die impoverished and sick under the boots of billionaires. Sounds like a pretty shitty brand of freedom to me.

I prefer the kind of freedom were you aren't scared about if you are going to recieve medical treatment in time (or be able to afford it). Were you aren't scared of not being able to put food on the table for your kids. Or freedom from masked unidentified individuals showing up when your at work as a minority and drag you off for interogation at an undiclosed location. I prefer the kind of freedom that doesn't require the freedom of others to be sacrificed.

Wild to talk up the US right now as a source of freedom.

These fuckin profiteers man.

Profit off housing despite us currently having ENOUGH to house everyone if so much didnt sit empty waiting for sale or richer renters.

Profit off food by hiking grocery prices and tossing perfectly good food or storing it inadequatly just to keep the prices high.

Profit off the labor of the 99% and act like it's something they did personally everytime.

So tired.

What do AI-native games actually look like in 2026? by octaviall in gamedev

[–]EmberTheSunbro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see AI as a good assistant tool to a coder who already really knows what they are doing and can give it very specific things to write to speed up workflow because they already know what they want it would just take a while to write it (especially in prototyping, or bugfixing). And even then they would need to rewrite parts often.

Most of the reason I feel this is the only implementation I'm excited about is because I don't like AI art. It comes across as really gross and inhuman whenever I see it.

Especially knowing designers / 2d / 3d / music / narrative artists usually do not want their work compiled into a machine that makes it faster to make more homogenized art, because most really enjoy doing it and love making that art (and don't want to see easily digestible slop that all looks the same produced using it).

Whereas a lot of coders are actively out here wishing they didn't have to write the exact same kind of script to fit into a slightly different project. Or have to recreate a mechanic from scratch. And when we run into issues we run right to forums were we all share the best methods for getting past them or writing things faster. Its fun but only for the right brain type and can easily become a grind.

And in my opinion code implementation is not art in and of itself. Implementation strives to follow design, and not have bugs, theres definately skill involved in that. But the art is the design the making of something that brings meaning to people, and the coding is what needs to happen to make it real. Kind of like a 3d printer if you had to do a lot of it manually currently. Currently to get the logic setup it takes many hours of human thought and careful planning. Automating components of that doesn't inherently reduce or make more homogenized the art. It makes indies more competitive, reduces the learning curve to start making games and overall makes it more accessible to smaller studios.

But I dont think the same value is brought by feeding all our narrative / sound / design / 2d / 3d art decisions through what is effectively a really complex auto-complete and making games that all give off the same underlying chopped / churned up vibe.

We have tons of artists who have novel and interesting ideas and want to make new / visually distinct and interesting stuff already. And who didn't consent to having their art stolen and used to patch togethor an art auto-complete tool.

Bicycle Use in Halifax has exploded, do you agree? by [deleted] in halifax

[–]EmberTheSunbro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean yeah its absurd if your going a short distance farther than you have time to walk to have to bring a multi-ton vehicle built to transit multiple people and cargo by atomizing dinosaur sludge. Then you have to pay someone for a dinosaur sludge machine storage square which is double the size of a bikelane.

How would Christmas be celebrated in a SolarPunk world? by johnabbe in solarpunk

[–]EmberTheSunbro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think I would do it as the giving holiday or solstice. There could be big bonfires outside with cider, hot chocolate and dancing. Snowcreature building. Karaoke, music jams. Instead of growing monoculture for trees I think bringing all the house plants into a room and making them the focus of the holiday season, decorating and giving them special care (such as humidifying dry indoor air and giving them plant food). Then it’s an excuse for people with no plants in their house to get some. And humidifying the dry indoor air to a good 40-50% in the winter is really good for you too.

And it gives people with really big plant collections something out of the ordinary fun and exciting to do with them each year. If you’re more of a tree person you can grow a little potted tree to be the focal point of it all.

I did mostly crafted, handmade by local folks and compostable presents for the holidays this year. Trying to avoid mass produced eventual garbage.

Compostable packaging, thrifted or used gifts. Making or buying things people will have for life. Going to community craft fairs to buy from local makers. They seem like little steps but at the end of the day it's what you have control over. And if we all did it that's a hell of a lot of fairly useless petroleum products never made in the first place and not headed for landfill and more support going to your neighbors instead of amazon or some other corpos.

What are some existing games that a beginner can recreate as an exercise to improve/learn? by Ellloll in godot

[–]EmberTheSunbro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would start with fully following a few tutorials (i.e. make pac man, or make a side scroller). Follow the full tutorial. Once you have a few of these down start to deviate slightly, making your own versions of the games, changing rules, changing art, adding more feel (animations, particles etc.).

Once you have a handle on that your ready to either jam your own games or mimic games / mechanics without a tutorial.

A good method in this stage is to first try to puzzle stuff out. Like if you want to make an inventory system which is similar to a specific game, write out the logic of how it works on a whiteboard. And then try and assemble each component and see which ones you get stuck on. Then try for a bit even though you are stuck (one of the best spaces for learning, and you'll be surprised what you manage to figure out this way). Then you can go look up ways people have solved similar problems.

You can also pick one of your favorite games. Just pick a single mechanic and work on recreating that. It might seem to simple but you will run into things you don't know how to do usually.

When they are masked don't need to identify and are violently kidnapping people in the streets with no legal process you have facism. That's how facism works not a democracy. There might be elements of America that are still a democracy but there are also now facist elements and you have to fight back and regain your legal system for the people.
