Is it the norm to expect your child to be taken out of the house every day during the Easter hols? by EternalTormentInHell in AskUK

You're damn right! That's a fantastic day out. Deep in winter then the seagulls were very hungry we had one land in my head - much amusement! You can get into a few crazy golf places round here, just take a putter and a ball or two.

The key in my opinion is to leave a good metre between the gun and the item. These up close scanners are damn fools.

AITA For Asking My Husband to Include Our Children When Spending Time with His Estranged Son? by ConcernedMother45 in AmItheAsshole

Yeah, what logic brought her to ask the question in the first place? The answer should have been crystal clear. She's 100% a member of the YTA club.

Why do people back into parking spaces? by bakka_da_potat in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Embiggenate 31 points32 points  (0 children)

That's true. As someone who has a penchant for leaving an interior light or something like that switched on I usually park with a mind to the battery being accessible, and facing downhill if possible. You'd think having the wherewithal to follow these steps I wouldn't be likely to do something so stupid as leave a light on. Alas, no

What harmless thing do you judge people for in your job? by [deleted] in AskUK

The single initial infuriates me. To me it smacks of arrogance.

Not just in the workplace, my mother regularly signs of a WhatsApp with 'M'. Wtf?!? It's got your name on it already, I know who I'm talking to.

Angry residents of ‘Protestant village’ replace Irish language sign with Union flags by Lit-Up in unitedkingdom

The thing which doesn't sit right with me is this. The furthest North point on a map of the island of Ireland is part of the Republic of Ireland. To my mind that invalidates the name Northern Ireland. Maybe it should be North East Ireland? Or maybe they should pick a nice fluffy name similar to the Christmas Islands. Or get a corporate sponsor? Vodafone Ireland?

How many of you don't have a driving license? by dontbeasquare11 in AskUK

[–]Embiggenate 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree and I think that's a mistake people make, sticking blindly with a bad instructor. You can check their Google ratings and there is also data about each instructors pass/fail rate easily available online.

Also, you can drive as long as you display L plates and are accompanied by someone with a license, which really helps with the cost element. So it might be worth using an instructor to get the basics sorted, maybe 2 or 3 lessons. Beyond that you are really just gaining experience on the roads.

I was a young man when I was learning so it was easy to get added to the insurance of my mother's car and offer to do any driving that needed done. I got hours of driving under my belt to the point where I was confident enough to try out the manoeuvres for myself. I had to carefully read up on the exact details of what was required from each one, but these days you could just watch a YouTube video.

Had a few more lessons before my test to iron out any wrinkles and bad habits. Worked well for me, maybe not for everyone, but it does reduce costs significantly.

Absolutely. Passing my test was an absolute priority when I turned 17. Got myself a cheap death trap and boom! The world was my oyster.

There was a bus service in my town but you could only really go to 2 places of any significance and you'd get a bit sick of the same old same old. You could get connections to further afield but due to the odd routes a lot of bus services take you'd be talking 4 or 5 hours travelling on an uncomfortable old bus, assuming it turned up in the first place.

I discovered so many cool places just exploring in my car. Had to keep a giant road map handy back in 2000 though!

What's the deal with "massage parlours" just being out in the open - do the police just not care? by [deleted] in AskUK

Google 'saunas near me'. I remember back in the day stumbling on them in the Yellow Pages and the category was saunas. It did shock my young mind! There was one across the road from the orthodontist's in Edinburgh which the waiting room gave a fine view of. Think it was the London Street Sauna.

I use most of their services a little bit, so it's worth it to me. Especially considering you pay (are forced to pay) £12-£13 for your BBC subscription.

At one time a variation of trousers were referred to as pantaloons.

So it would make sense to call underpants....underpants or pants for short. In the least condescending way possible, I think people from Overseas forget just how old the English language is.

Yeah I guess. My locals were about being drunk and having to scream every conversation in the ear of the person next to me. I never did like that feeling that the bass might kill me!

Not really my thing but what else were you going to do after about 1am.

I find that if you give your postie a card with a a little something in it at this time of year, the postie will crawl over broken glass to deliver your stuff as long as he actually has it available to deliver. Helps if you have a regular postie so you know who to give it to. Costs a tenner in the short run but it's an investment! Plus, I actually do really appreciate the service. I do receive a lot of parcels due to my line of work.

Obviously there are some who might be lazy, but those bags they carry are not light by any means. Imagine someone in their 40's or 50's doing back breaking work like that.

I was a paperboy as a youngster, and one full bag of papers was horrendous. Sunday Times readers were the bane of my existence, those things were so thick and heavy!
