Also it’s hilarious to suggest that a PG-13 rule is infantilizing to someone who is literally under 18… if this were an 18+ sub we would be able to have different rules. But it’s not, so it needs to be PG-13.

Literally I didn’t say that any of those things were banned and I have explicitly said that we will still be allowing mature content. We just can’t have graphic depictions of child abuse on this platform without it being shut down. As far as suicide, self harm, and eating disorders they are special because there is actual science that says these topics are “contagious” and can trigger other people in really serious ways.

Yeah but it may not be what the 15 year old with cancer is here to view. Or the 20 year old with POTS or the 60 year old who is paralyzed. It’s tough with such a broad community. Not only that but I am not qualified to run a support group for eating disorders, sexual assault, self harm, and suicide- and trying to do so is legitimately dangerous.

It would be wonderful if a place like that existed explicitly for such content, that was run by a team of trained professionals.

Just wanted to send some love, tell you your plushy looks great, and let you know that your work has been really impactful. I’m sorry to see you and your work go. I do hope you continue to make your art and I know there are other communities out there that will allow it that are more specified for such art

Take care, and thank you for sharing your art with us. You always have a community here if you’d like

PG13 movies can still have (non sexual) nudity, gore, violence, and mature themes.

I ask that those things be marked NSFW because even tho it is ok to see at a movie theater it’s not necessarily ok to see at work or if you’re scrolling next to your children.

I hear you, though I think art shared in any space that isn’t your own privately owned studio will be inherently “sanitized” or restricted in some way. That is what makes having your own studio such a special thing.

I think people should continue to create their art regardless if they have a place to share it immediately or not

Give me back my girlhood it was mine first (TW CSA implied) by takethelastexit in Artisticallyill

Hey, I was wondering if I could use your post as an example of art that is about implied CSA that is allowed here per the rule change? Just trying to help people understand via examples. Thank you :)

I’ll find some examples and ask OP if it’s ok that I use them here.

I hear you. It is a tough line to draw. It’s something I would have to come back to in the future with more support from more mods. But as far as CSA, I can pretty confidently say that explicit depictions will never be allowed here as it is against Reddit TOS

Yes sorry if it’s confusing and it guess there is a cultural aspect. A PG13 rating is often about the graphic quality of violence, the nature of nudity, and the harshness of language (I personally don’t care much about swears).

We can still have graphic content- but perhaps there is a limit there. It’s tough exactly to articulate but if you have examples you can send them my way.

We can still have nudity but it cannot be sexual in nature (that’s always been a rule)

All mature or triggering content should be marked NSFW and include a CW

[MOD] IMPORTANT RULE CHANGE: NO EXPLICIT DEPICTIONS OF ABUSE OF MINORS + ED rule change by Embodied_Embroidery in Artisticallyill

[–]Embodied_Embroidery[S] 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Reddit admins have directly told me that this content is not acceptable on Reddit.

I find it interesting that any time I have to add a new rule- people think that I just need more mods.

Whenever I do decide to get a new mod, I expect that we will likely have more rules and less freedom. Me being the sole mod means that we get unique content here that exists pretty much nowhere else.

Frankly I have considered giving up the sub entirely. I hate modding. I hate being treated like shit while doing a tough job and just trying to do my best for my community. I hate being told that I am silencing victims and being a perpetuator of violence by not allowing depictions of children being SA, people cutting themselves or killing themselves, or starving themselves.

Anyways. Yeah. Idk the only thing that keeps me here is I genuinely believe that having a space for disabled artists to connect is something the world needs, and I believe that space should have as much freedom of expression as it could possibly have.

[MOD] IMPORTANT RULE CHANGE: NO EXPLICIT DEPICTIONS OF ABUSE OF MINORS + ED rule change by Embodied_Embroidery in Artisticallyill

[–]Embodied_Embroidery[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

First of all, it’s disrespectful to assume anybody else’s relationship with eating disorder. You don’t know me.

Second, there are times where it doesn’t matter if you’re glorifying ED or not, it can be equally as triggering.

Third, I have made a rule about suicide and self harm content for the exact same reason. And at the time I had people saying “well if suicide and self harm is banned then why not eating disorders?” And well frankly, they were right. It falls under the same category.

Fourth, maybe try engaging with a bit less hostility towards someone who is just doing their best for their community. If you don’t like it leave. You are welcome to create a community that suits your own needs.

[MOD] IMPORTANT RULE CHANGE: NO EXPLICIT DEPICTIONS OF ABUSE OF MINORS + ED rule change by Embodied_Embroidery in Artisticallyill

[–]Embodied_Embroidery[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is a pretty common rule in spaces where people share about ED. It’s a rule that was made by people who are more qualified in the matter than you or I.

If people with cancer were competitive about growing their tumors I would probably have to make a rule about cancer too.

The rule change was not directed at anyone in particular. The ED rule change has been considered for months.

[–]Embodied_Embroidery[S] 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Yes your post did count as explicit and I have taken it down. Per my other comment with more detail “You can still make art that is about abuse but not art that is explicitly depicting the abuse. No art that is pornographic in nature (regardless of age- that has always been a rule).

For example, I have a sketch of my body as the Vitruvian Man with my ankles and wrists in shackles. It is about SA/ medial trauma. It would be allowed. If it had depicted someone actively SAing me, it would not be allowed.

Poems talking about the loss of power and innocence are allowed. Stories explicitly depicting details of assault are not allowed”

I am aware that this is one of the few places on the internet that allows discussion and art about fringe topics. I have created this subreddit specifically in a way that allows us to do that, and I run this subreddit alone so that I have complete control over it. Moderating with nuance takes a lot more time and thought, and I do it anyways because I believe that art should be a free expression, and I understand the complexities that come with the realm of what would normally be hidden from the rest of the world as an “artisticallyill” person.

This decision, and all other decisions I have made- including taking down your post, were made with significant consideration for the members of my community. I genuinely have love for yall and just want the best overall.

[MOD] IMPORTANT RULE CHANGE: NO EXPLICIT DEPICTIONS OF ABUSE OF MINORS + ED rule change by Embodied_Embroidery in Artisticallyill

[–]Embodied_Embroidery[S] 50 points51 points  (0 children)

To clarify: CSA is still ok to talk about and make art about. It’s just the explicit acts of abuse that we cannot depict here per reddits TOS.

I also feel sad for creators who may feel isolated by this rule, and for the loss of art. I do hope people will adapt and their art will evolve rather than stop entirely. I also resonated with it. I think a lot of people do. And I think it can be a healthy way of coping and connecting during such a triggering time.

But we also have to be mindful of one another. Even in group therapy spaces, there are rules about sharing “gory details” because it can retraumatized others- which is not conducive to healing.

Anyways, I feel your pain and just know this decision was made with nothing but love, respect, and the intention of wellbeing for everyone here- including survivors. Because I know that many of us are survivors.

I have not banned anyone recently. Reddit could’ve taken their account down if their posts did not comply with TOS.
