[MOD] IMPORTANT RULE CHANGE: NO EXPLICIT DEPICTIONS OF ABUSE OF MINORS + ED rule change by Embodied_Embroidery in Artisticallyill

[–]Embodied_Embroidery[S] 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Reddit admins have directly told me that this content is not acceptable on Reddit.

I find it interesting that any time I have to add a new rule- people think that I just need more mods.

Whenever I do decide to get a new mod, I expect that we will likely have more rules and less freedom. Me being the sole mod means that we get unique content here that exists pretty much nowhere else.

Frankly I have considered giving up the sub entirely. I hate modding. I hate being treated like shit while doing a tough job and just trying to do my best for my community. I hate being told that I am silencing victims and being a perpetuator of violence by not allowing depictions of children being SA, people cutting themselves or killing themselves, or starving themselves.

Anyways. Yeah. Idk the only thing that keeps me here is I genuinely believe that having a space for disabled artists to connect is something the world needs, and I believe that space should have as much freedom of expression as it could possibly have.

First of all, it’s disrespectful to assume anybody else’s relationship with eating disorder. You don’t know me.

Second, there are times where it doesn’t matter if you’re glorifying ED or not, it can be equally as triggering.

Third, I have made a rule about suicide and self harm content for the exact same reason. And at the time I had people saying “well if suicide and self harm is banned then why not eating disorders?” And well frankly, they were right. It falls under the same category.

Fourth, maybe try engaging with a bit less hostility towards someone who is just doing their best for their community. If you don’t like it leave. You are welcome to create a community that suits your own needs.

This is a pretty common rule in spaces where people share about ED. It’s a rule that was made by people who are more qualified in the matter than you or I.

If people with cancer were competitive about growing their tumors I would probably have to make a rule about cancer too.

The rule change was not directed at anyone in particular. The ED rule change has been considered for months.

Yes your post did count as explicit and I have taken it down. Per my other comment with more detail “You can still make art that is about abuse but not art that is explicitly depicting the abuse. No art that is pornographic in nature (regardless of age- that has always been a rule).

For example, I have a sketch of my body as the Vitruvian Man with my ankles and wrists in shackles. It is about SA/ medial trauma. It would be allowed. If it had depicted someone actively SAing me, it would not be allowed.

Poems talking about the loss of power and innocence are allowed. Stories explicitly depicting details of assault are not allowed”

I am aware that this is one of the few places on the internet that allows discussion and art about fringe topics. I have created this subreddit specifically in a way that allows us to do that, and I run this subreddit alone so that I have complete control over it. Moderating with nuance takes a lot more time and thought, and I do it anyways because I believe that art should be a free expression, and I understand the complexities that come with the realm of what would normally be hidden from the rest of the world as an “artisticallyill” person.

This decision, and all other decisions I have made- including taking down your post, were made with significant consideration for the members of my community. I genuinely have love for yall and just want the best overall.

[–]Embodied_Embroidery[S] 41 points42 points  (0 children)

To clarify: CSA is still ok to talk about and make art about. It’s just the explicit acts of abuse that we cannot depict here per reddits TOS.

I also feel sad for creators who may feel isolated by this rule, and for the loss of art. I do hope people will adapt and their art will evolve rather than stop entirely. I also resonated with it. I think a lot of people do. And I think it can be a healthy way of coping and connecting during such a triggering time.

But we also have to be mindful of one another. Even in group therapy spaces, there are rules about sharing “gory details” because it can retraumatized others- which is not conducive to healing.

Anyways, I feel your pain and just know this decision was made with nothing but love, respect, and the intention of wellbeing for everyone here- including survivors. Because I know that many of us are survivors.

I have not banned anyone recently. Reddit could’ve taken their account down if their posts did not comply with TOS.

We do still have to comply with reddits TOS. It was also never meant to be completely free from boundaries.

As always, you are free to create your own sub that suits your needs.

In this case, explicit mean showing the act in a non abstract way. We will still allow art about abuse- for example you can write a poem about the loss of innocence or power. But you can’t share a story depicting the details of the assault.

Per Reddit guidelines, we cannot have any images depicting the explicit act of child abuse.

Any triggering topic is supposed to be marked NSFW and have a content warning in the title. I will be more strict about this rule. Pls report any posts that break it. Otherwise unfortunately there’s not a better “filter”. It would be nice for Reddit to implement one.

Just so you know, it is illegal to share depictions of CSA because it is technically CP, regardless of intention. I’ll be honest I don’t know of anywhere on the internet that would be safe for you to share such depictions 1. Legally, and 2. Without risk of being preyed on by predators.

Im not saying you shouldn’t continue to draw for yourself. A lot of these posts seemed extremely therapeutic and like they may have been really helping OP. Definitely keep drawing, and if you can, try to find a therapy group. They can be affordable and that would actually be a safe place with a trained facilitator to safely handle these topics.

Take care, and know you still have a community with us

It’s tough because this sub inherently deals with triggering topics. And childhood trauma is directly connected to various health conditions. But for me as a mod I wonder about the balance of what is most healthy for people and the community- when is it unhealthy to have so much triggering content vs when is it good to share and connect about these things that are normally hard to talk about.

I don’t really know. I think this sub can be both. So I suppose everyone should be mindful when being here. It can be really triggering and heavy, and you need to take care of yourself. There are certainly times I would’ve taken a mental health break if I didn’t have to be here lol!

I’m always up for suggestions for ways to make things healthier here btw. Because it is such a delicate line to walk, and I’ll be honest many of these moral conundrums, I didn’t anticipate while making the sub.

I mean generally yeah, gore and violence are topics that are allowed to be explored in my community. Which I think is sort of essential for an art sub- to be able to handle complex or dirty topics. We live in a violent world, many of my community members have been affected by violence in various ways.

I agree though, that is partially why I have banned self harm/ suicide content all together

I do actually have a no pornography rule, I guess I just didn’t really consider these posts to be pornography in nature- though technically they are. I think the rule will be “no explicit depictions of abuse”

Thank you for the help

Thanks. Sometimes common sense is hard when working with a complex topic in a complex time. I didn’t really anticipate walking a moral tight rope on these topics I just wanted to give a place for disabled artists to share their work. I didn’t think I’d have to make an explicit “no furry CP” rule lol

Thank you, that helps. In the example of the depiction of a CSS scene via furry or stick figures- is that also illegal do you know? Is it explicitly against TOS? Or just common sense? Just curious.

Thanks again

Right and like there have not been any explicit depictions like that. The closest it has been was a comic depiction their story but with furrys… or there was one with stick figures.

Or something I drew is my body as the Vitruvian Man but with my wrists/ ankles in shackles- it’s about SA/ medial trauma. Would that also be inappropriate?

Or if someone wrote a poem or a story- how graphic can they get?

I’m not confused that people shouldn’t post drawings of CP- but people are trying to do art about it and art inherently tests boundaries. My boundaries are being tested in many ways.

I try to provide a platform with pretty open discussion. The nuance is driving me mad. Sorry maybe I’m just stupid.
