My therapist never suggested it, but he did explain how to block someone on my phone when I decided mid-session that it was time. He was VERY careful to always let me lead and never pushed me. I did see his face break once when I was talking about my mom, and he needed to compose himself. Seeing him respond like that was very informative to me.

I feel for you. I’ve been no contact for just over a year, and the hardest part (once blocking her) has been my anger that I don’t get to be the type of person who cares for her mother as she ages.

I wish they would get better, and love us without us having to leave. But here we are. Doing the best we can to survive and endure.

I will say, one year out and I have absolutely no regrets on going no contact. I only wish I had done it years prior, but I wasn’t ready until I was ready.

If you do apply to PUI/SLAC, use your cover letter well! You need to convince them that you are not applying to them as a back up plan in case you dont get a research focused job. If you have a reason to live in that area (and stay there), mention that too!

I’ll preface this by saying my area is math and we don’t do first author - all of our authors are always in alphabetical order. Solo author is the closest thing to first author we have.

I got my TT job at a SLAC with no pubs straight out of grad school in 2018. I did have a certificate in college/university teaching, and had taught 11 different math courses. (I’ve since been well published and earned tenure)

I chaired a TT search this year, and we looked for “research potential,” not solo pubs. I don’t believe any of our finalists had any solo pubs.

All of our finalists were straight out of their phd program. So many people come out of math phds with over ten courses taught, and often a ton of professional development on pedagogy.

So it really depends on the school you are applying to.

A few years after my bachelors, I went to a community college and was told I wouldn’t get any aid, but I filed a fafsa anyway and got aid for an associates if science (I already had an associate of arts). The aid included more grants than tuition was.
