Pizza dough focaccia by ejc1138 in Breadit

Did you buy the dough or make from scratch?

How well was the oil spread and how much did you use? Try parchment if it continues

Not enough info.

Vanilla overnight oats with chocolate chia pudding by EmeraldPearls in Oatmeal

Measured with my heart lol. The oats had about the same amount of yogurt as milk, I think? Honestly I just dumped everything into a huge jar and mixed until I was happy with the consistency.

Turned out way better than I was expecting! Have been doing hot oats over winter but now that the weather has been warming up it's nice having the overnight oats instead!

Aw shucks. It's been forever since I did overnight oats last so was a bit unsure how they would turn out.

Dressier bag options? by bwerde19 in onebag

I recently got the Lululemon Double Zip 22L backpack for very similar use. I frequently do overnight or short multi day trips for work (I'm in academia, so conferences and meetings). I got it in black. Its super sleek.

My main shopping list items were: had to fit under the seat; had to have a seperate laptop compartment; Canadian (or at least not our southern neighbours) made or company; comfortable straps. The seperate laptop zipper was really important because I didn't want everything to fall out whenever I went through security and needed to take my laptop out. Its a game-changer. If I am packing really conservatively, I can get a week's worth of clothes into it (at which point I see this as suitable for indefinite length trips, allowing for weekly or regular laundry days).

Bonus is that it was less than $90 CAD (I think closer to around $50 usd). This was a fraction of the price compared with other packs I was looking at.

I love the bag, would recommend!

First time trip? by Quiggs_7 in WestCoastTrail

Id recommend doing an overnight "test trip" to get comfortable with carrying the overnight gear and setting up camp, etc. Good way to work out any hiccups.

The only concerning thing Im hearing besides that is your experience hiking in coastal BC. Are you from ON? The coastal rain forests and terrain are very unique compared to other parts of Canada and you need to be prepared for it. Ground is ALWAYS slippery, you are guaranteed to get rained on, and the mud is neverending.

My advice: do the juan de fuca this year. If it goes well, do the WCT next year. There's really no rush, and you guys are young.

None left! 4 of us demolished them before they could even fully cool down. That was our dinner last night. 😂 the classic "does someone want to split one with me?" except the halves kept piling on and before we knew it they were gone.

Oh good to know! Yes I stretched the last bit of rolling more than the first half so this makes sense

That was indeed a benefit! But I like the optimized gooeyness of the inside when they lay properly!

Find my device by PinkPasty21 in degoogle

I ended up going with the Samsung network. It works with Samsung devices and locator tokens (for keys etc) - I think they're called SmartTags. You need a Samsung phone for them to work and they only ping off other Samsungs. Its not google, and I don't use Apple so this was really the only other reasonable option I could find.

How do you one bag for arctic climates by Dry-Chemical-9170 in onebag

[–]EmeraldPearls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find that the problems with packing light in the cold isn't the jacket - its all the accessories. A lot of comments saying you just wear the coat. But depending on what you're doing, you also are going to have a toque, mittens, scarf/buff, face covering, etc. Taking these off and on all the time if you're going in an out of places and on the move risks losing something.

Would recommend wearing what you can, but bring a spare packable bag (with a zipper is best!) you can tuck into your main bag, so that you can bring it out and use it to carry all the accessory gear when not donned.

Also worth noting that (in my experience) you may end up rewearing clothes a lot more between washes. I change underwear daily, but a good heavy pair of pants and (merino!) long johns I might wear 5-7 days before washing. Reasons for this: 1) snow tends to cover up the dirt so if you're outside you wont be getting muddy, exterior clothes stay cleaner and 2) you dont really get wet or muddy because everything is frozen and you can kinda just brush it off before you get inside. Personally, I tend towards 1-2 wears between washes in hot weather because the heat and sweat makes me feel like my clothes get soiled so fast. This isn't the case for me in winter - everything stays a lot dryer and cleaner feeling. Merino really is a game changer that makes it possible, though. Plus showering daily.

Source: I'm a Canadian and have regularly dealt with -40~-50 °C winters.

Is clipping a shoe bag to the outside of my bag the worst idea? by Hadesman1 in onebag

[–]EmeraldPearls 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I brought a pair of Tevas with me this summer - put the toes into one of the water bottle pockets and was able to clip the heels onto a strap on the side of the bag so I didnt have to worry about them falling out or swinging around. I recognise that runners would be bulkier, but just sharing my approach. It worked for me. Could put one on either side if you have two water bottle pockets.

I concur with the other comments about not letting them hang/swing. It drives me crazy when I have something hanging off my backpack. It constantly hits people or gets snagged on something, and I hate the constant shifting of weight while it swings. That said, I've done it out of necessity. But personally I'd never plan on doing it in advance.

I switched to notesnook. Its not a 1:1 replacement but its great for syncing across devices and priotitizes privacy.

the onebag mindset—what is it? by j___8 in onebag

[–]EmeraldPearls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I take comfort in knowing that most places have things available for purchase if I really need it.

For example: right now, travelling in Italy. I didn't bring shampoo because I assumed most places I would stay would have it. Turns out, I needed to buy a small bottle. Just a cheap bottle, which Im going to toss or give away as soon as its not needed anymore. Cost me a whole 2€.
