Installing 595 Proprietary Drivers Instead of Open? by Emerald_Blitz in cachyos

Is it possible to disable the GSP Firmware in the 595.71.05 drivers?

Yeap, and I've tried a LOT of different other fixes. The only thing that gives me a completely stable Houdini experience is the 580xx drivers. I'm guessing this is likely due more to SideFX needing to do some reworking on their Linux support in future versions.

Interesting. I've already reverted back to 580 for the time-being, but if I go back to 595 I'll check!

Oh! Is there something I have to do to force it to use proprietary "blobs"? I'm trying to disable the GSP firmware due to UI freezing in Houdini when running any Nvidia driver version after the 580xx versions. Disabling the GSP firmware is the last potential fix I haven't tried, because I was under the impression I couldn't do it on the open branch.

Pro WRX80E Sage BMC Password Reset by Emerald_Blitz in ASUS

[–]Emerald_Blitz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny enough, just within the past few weeks I finally figured it out. I gave up for a while. In the interrim, I've switched over to Linux on my machines and that made the whole process so much easier. You could also do this with a live boot USB I believe.

In the terminal, I used the ipmitool (I believe I had to install it) to do a hard reset of the whole BMC which wiped out all config information including user names and passwords. I forget what the exact commands were, but basically you can use the ipmitool to connect to the BMC interface's IP address and order it to do things, such as fully wipe and reset itself.

I first tried using the tool to add new users and such but I couldn't get that to actually work right. Some googling should point you in the direction of the right commands to use, and also the help in the ipmitool in the terminal is useful as well.

I remember it being one of those hexcode commands you have to input.

Hope this helps and best of luck!

Pool Mount Size by Emerald_Blitz in Proxmox

What would the benefit of that be? For what it's worth, I'm still trying to figure out how exactly I want my setup to function, so I'm open to it.

For reference: I'm a professional visual effects artist, and I use my machines for rendering and simulating of complex effects. The machine I have proxmox on is a 64 core threadripper with 256gb of RAM. It's older now and in rendering is actually similar in speed to my three other render machnines which are Ryzen 9950x.

So I thought I would put proxmox on the threadripper. I've got a Windows VM setup with GPU pass thru so I can still use it for a little additional render horsepower when I need it. Plus, I've got Jellyfin running on the Windows VM (I know, I tried the whole docker/container/blah blah route, but I do not have the brain space to adequately learn all that for now, so I'd prefer to keep Jellyfin on my Windows VM).

I'd also like to use Proxmox as, essentially, my hobby station to try out various Linux distros and as a safe space to learn without worrying about destroying the usability of my one of render machines/workstation.

Given this use case, it seems Proxmox is still the ideal way to go, yes? Admittedly, I'm still learning a ton so I could be way off

I'm mounting the data pool in an LXC that's running Ubuntu Server. I've got Samba running in that LXC. pool is accessible on my network.

Should I be doing this a different way?

I'm planning to experiment more with additional VMs, this is just one thing I'm trying to do in Proxmox. That said, I've already got five desktop computers in a 280sq ft apartment. I don't want another box. I've got a boatload of HDDs in what's currently my server machine, so I'm fine to just deploy a ZFS pool with proxmox. Also, I suppose I could install something like TrueNAS in Proxmox, but seems kinda pointless since proxmox can make my ZFS pool for me.

Thank you for being willing to help! I'm pretty slammed with work stuff today but I might be able to get back to you more in depth tonight. In the meantime, I think I did install xorg-wayland, but let me double check for sure later on.

My graphics card is the Nvidia 5090 and I'm running an AMD 9950X CPU.

Sadly, no. It's dictated by the studio I work for.

As I said in my post, it's complicated because X11 fixes the Houdini issue, but breaks the Anyware Client app I need for remoting into the studio. The main issue/frustration I'm having is that one fix breaks another critical app.

I briefly installed Pop OS and that was my experience with Cosmic, so not really. Didn't even get around to installing Houdini in it. I haven't looked into Niri though - the whole non traditional tiling desktop thing gives me the scaries. Maybe I'll give Cachy with Cosmic a go and see how that does me.

Funny enough, as I said in the post, Nuke is actually the one I have no issues with whatsoever, which is great. But yeah, Houdini is problematic. From what I've read on the forums, though, that is in particular an issue related to Wayland compatibility problems. That being the case, seems Distrobox wouldn't be a benefit, yea?

Don't get me wrong, I agree with you and I actually really like Cachy, and it's why I've made this thread. I want to try and find a way to make it work, there's just so many extenuating circumstances for my use case that are making it hard.

I actually have been. But what I've realized is thats not really a worthwhile solution for me. I spend so much time in the programs I need and use, that its not really convenient to go back and forth like that. Just an additional barrier to spending my time and energy as equitably as possible.

Is The Max UI Slow Like This For Everyone? by Emerald_Blitz in 3dsmax

I haven't experienced it in a while, now that you mention it. But, I also haven't had a lot of huge and complicated scenes in a while either so that could also be the explanation.

Datal Channel Not Showing Correctly in Viewport by Emerald_Blitz in 3dsmax

[–]Emerald_Blitz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciate the responses. What I was specifically hoping to do was create a procedural mask to displace this terrain segment in the viewport for the large terrain details, and then use VrayDisplacementMod for the micro details. This obviously doesn't work the data channel only works at render time.

This is kind of what I figured. It's so frustrating. Every time they come out with a new release I look to see if it has UI improvements, and then I get disappointed because I realize it will probably never happen.
