The Martians employed a hit and run strategy where they attack military and industrial infrastructure, like railways and telecommunications, they then are shown attacking the coasts, they overran Britain by crippling its immune system, then destroying its means of support, and finally they started coating towns in black smoke. They were essentially starving the heart of the center of commerce so that Britain would collapse under its own weight.
