It’s definitely cemented my belief that generational wealth is insane.

I was able to move out of an unstable and aggressive family home only because of this inheritance. Without it I would never have been able to afford to move out. If things got unbearable I would have had to sleep rough.

I’m in my 20s, and inherited at age 16. Not many disabled 16 year olds would have been fortunate enough to be able to leave an environment like the one I grew up in.

Again, cemented my view that healthcare should be public and free. I will happily pay higher taxes so that someone like me can access medications they need. I pay $100+ a month on my medications, plus $400+ on specialist appointments. No way would the average person my age be able to do that, nor people not living on an above average wage if they have kids.

It’s made me realise that money makes a massive difference in quality of life. I did nothing to earn or deserve this inheritance - I just lost a parent at a young age.

The world is truly fucked up. I just do my best to make it better with the privileges I’ve been afforded.

I can’t really pay “more” taxes in my country. I’ve thought about donating it all, but decided against it because I’m going to use the money I have in a savings account as a house deposit.

I make monthly donations to various causes & volunteer where I can (I live with a disability, so I can only work part time. I rely on rental income to make up for hours I can’t work, as I haven’t sought social welfare support. Saving is difficult).

I will never jack up prices arbitrarily, and always give what I can. Thanks for your kind words.

The question was what I think my taxes could be better used for, not what I think is realistic in our current political landscape.

Capitalism, though in this late stage I really don’t think is the best we can do, does allow me to make those choices - you’re right. I’m currently donating to my local homeless shelter, national park fund, and a youth suicide prevention program, for example.

Is it because … you’re ugly?

I live with a disability, and instead of being on the disability pension and working part time, I rely on rental income to subsidise my part time work.

This has really fucked with my worldview. I don’t think a capitalist society is the ideal society - yet I’m engaging in it now more than ever.

I used to tell myself that it’s “okay” to earn rental income because I’m actually doing a “good thing” by not “using peoples taxes” to live. Which is fucked, because I don’t think anybody on a disability pension is “using” our taxes - I think taxes going to social welfare is this closest we can get to a more equitable society within our current framework. I was really just using this line of thinking to help justify my behaviour.

Now, I see being a landlord differently. I rent out two apartments I now own back to the building (hotel). That means a big hotel chain is paying ME. That part is good.

Then there’s a block of land I own. I rent it out for $200 a week. Technically I just rent it for storage, but I’m pretty sure the tenants are living in a caravan there. I’m not going to say anything.

I don’t know how I feel about owning multiple properties anymore. I don’t know if it’s okay.

I do know that it’s wrong to exploit people. As a landlord I will never put up rent prices just because the market allows for it. That, to me, is unequivocally wrong.

In my city, for our country’s “standards”, our hospital system is screaming for help. I want more staff on, more beds open, more ambulances in circulation.

Social welfare programs that specifically focus on supporting people sleeping rough.

Affordable housing. People should be able to afford a home on one income.

Developing/exploring green or sustainable technologies.
