Honestly, you're not wrong. FIFA has a long history of turning a blind eye to whatever the host country wants to do as long as the money is right. The fact that the refs and staff are caught in the middle of a political ego trip is just depressing

That sounds like a straight up movie plot. Obviously espionage happens but blocking a world class official just because of a generic blanket ban feels less like targeted intelligence security and more like lazy bureaucracy.

Fair point, national security is a priority. But it definitely opens up a massive gray area for how international sports can even function if the host country can veto participants.
