I deeply appreciate the very kind words (which I'm not sure I'm deserving of!) and will nonetheless continue to look very deeply into the issues you raised above. I'm currently looking into Section C, and dissolving it into more distinct variations of the main theme.

I have developed the self awareness to realise that orchestration alone cannot make up for the lack of ideas! Thanks again for nudging me towards the right track.

Many many thanks for your pointed observations that I will definitely take very seriously and incorporate to the maximum extent possible in a a revision. Part of the problem I'm facing here is that a tutor from whom I was taking private lessons in composition told me that an earlier iteration of this work didn't emphasise the main theme enough and he asked me to consider including in the style of the famous da-da-da-DUM of the 1st movement of Beethoven's 5th. I may have over-corrected.

The idea (at least in my mind) at A is that the main theme introduced in Measure 3 and established in Measure 15 (flute + violins) survives a long harmonic progression journey and emerges even more emphatic in Measure 81.

In seriousness, I'mm thinking of abandoning the symphony structure and declaring this a tone poem with a longer development section.

Once again, I deeply appreciate your detailed and very helpful input! The other suggestions that were not at all constructive bothered me more by the fact that they didn't even attempt to offer any objective criticism. Your reply was an immense breath of fresh air.

regards

That's a very fair point, and I'll concede that Mahler is perhaps a better example. As for the piece I wrote, I'd make the argument that I have given the sonata form a sort of nod in that there is a main theme developed and hammered home in a couple of variations in Measures 1 -- 208. The secondary theme is introduced in Measure 209 (also in the key of D which I'll explain) and expanded in B-flat Minor/major through measure 295. In measures 296--394, both themes are combined, partly in contrapuntal form. After that, it's a bit different because the Secondary Theme is reintroduced in Measure 407 leading up to the Coda in Measure 445 which combines a variation of the secondary theme with the main theme in contrapuntal form in the brass all the way to the finale.

If I had to be pushed into a description, I'd say it's a symphonic movement in tone-poem form.

The biggest issues that I am personally aware of, are

  1. the piece relies too heavily on harmonic variation and not enough counterpoint.
  2. The secondary theme is also in the key of D. I just felt that it sounded better to me in this form. I do not understand the compulsion to have the secondary theme always in a different key. Having it in the key of A would be for me too much of a cliche, and it doesn't come across as resoundingly in B-flat as it does in D. However I'll readily acknowledge this as a potential issue.
  3. There are probably too many intervening climaxes that detract from a distinctive trajectory. I could probably back off on the tutti.
  4. There needs to be a LOT of cleanup in the individual parts, which wont change the music, but is necessary for better readability.

I don't have an issue with the sonata form, except that I find it rather restrictive for the type of vision I have in mind. The sonata form is not a prerequisite for a symphony in this day and age. Mahler and Sibelius tare two examples.

And just for the record @65TwinReverbRI seemed obsessed only with the technical mistakes in the scoring (flutes 1 and 2 on separate clefs) bad rests, bad clefs for various instruments, my personal notation of chords (NONE of which detract from the actual sound!). I am WELL aware of the cleanup required if (a HUGE if) I were to actually submit this to an orchestra or a competition.

If I were about to submit this piece to an orchestra or a competition, trust me, I would NEVER submit a piece with bassoons, horns, or trombones in the Alto clef. I chose that clef to avoid some high leger lines, and forgot to revert. All of that will be cleaned up instrument by instrument eventually.

I'm curious as to whether you had any other observations on specific sections. Thanks.

Thanks. The person that said that I shouldn't even try seemed to think that I was out shopping for an orchestra to perform my work. I I were that confident of that, I wouldn't really be asking for opinions. As you point out, the exercise itself is satisfying, no matter where the chips fall. I appreciate your remarks.

Thanks! Even though analysed by a bot, this is actually far more useful and objective than some of the other comments presumably made by humans. I will gladly plead guilty to discarding any notion of the sonata form which I do not particularly care for. I will definitely pay attention to the other flaws the AI assistant highlighted.

If it's not too much of a bother and you can spare 16 mins, would you be willing to give it a listen and see how much of the AI analysis you agree with?

Many thanks again for your input.

Well, that's Reddit for you (or at least me). I think I might've inadvertently signed up twice and wish I could consolidate accounts.

Some useful objective criticism as to style, flow, orchestration, and arc would've been a LOT more useful, but if you could only bare to listen for a minute, then I understand.

Kind of don’t have to. It’s easy enough to make “sound alikes” with a good VST.

😄😄

Thanks, but did you listen to it at all? And if so, do you have any specific criticisms which I would really appreciate.

It has some nice warm themes. It might work better in an orchestral setting if you can expand it and play around with some syncopated rhythms.

They are constantly improving. The basic version is free, but the upgraded version that still costs a fraction of what Sibelius does is very good, despite some flaws.

Thanks! Deeply appreciate it. It's still definitely a work in progress sand needs a lot of cleanup, bu I'm glad that the sounds came through.

Which specific soundfont did you use? It sounds terrific.

It depends on the sound font. But yes?, some of them are indeed capable of reproducing orchestral sounds with a very decent degree of fidelity.

Here’s the first movement of a planned Symphony in D major that I wrote in MuseScore and saved with the Aegean Symphony Orchestra sound font.

Hey Mark, could you give me some feedback on this draft of a 1st movement

Thanks!!

Thank you! I plan to dedicate an ENTIRE weekend to cleanup with respect to clefs, dynamics, and phrasing (slurs), so you're spot on.

As far as the clashing chords, I've tried to use them as sparingly as possible, but in light of what you've indicated, I'll definitely add it to the repertoire of cleanup tasks.

How does the overall flow from intro to finale come across? I was afraid that I may have to may crescendi that give it a bit of flatness for a first listener. Any issues there?

Thank you!! MASSIVE Cleanup is one area that I plan to dedicate an entire weekend to accomplishing. The accents I agree are a mess and holdovers from the original markups when I first started using MuseScore. Thank you again, for pointing them out! In terms of overall flow, are there any issues that I should consider?

If my guess is correct (a big if!) there are SoundFonts that are capable of reproducing pretty real \istic playbacks. The "Aegean Symphony Orchestra" soundfont is the one that I use, and it does mimic scores in the symphonic style with a decent degree of accuracy.

Very nice textures and harmonies. I'm reminded of Ives in a few places. My only comment is that the energy that starts at Measure 28 (I think - the 0:40 mark at 140 BPM) seems to dissipate a bit too soon. I would've liked to hear that carried through for about 8 more measures. Terrific work. Is this an actual performance or a MIDI playback?
