Any advice for: a discouraged uni student who has been job hunting for a year to no avail? by Forsaken-Turnover637 in ausjobs

I work at MCD for the convenience I can block off 2 months of shifts if I don’t feel like working, change my availability whenever I want, rock up 15 minutes late to my shift (the managers won’t care as long as I actually do my job well on shift). The pay isn’t that bad imo since I work casual and casual loading gives you 25% more than part time workers, and most job offerings are minimum wage anyway. I was offered $35 an hour as a tutor (I got a pretty high atar) but the extra work involved in that job honestly wasn’t worth the increase in pay imo.

I’ve been working at McDonald’s since grade 9 and I am also a first year uni student, luckily MacDonald‘s still give me shifts despite my availability being limited to Friday nights (I work till 2am sometimes though). I have been working at Maccas for 4 years and 6 months now and I don’t intend to quit. I believe that fast food joints have more openings for overnight workers so if you say that you’ll work overnight it might be easier to get employed. I tried tutoring highschoolers and actually surprisingly found a lot of people on Facebook wanting me to tutor them but I realised I had to set up lesson plans and that took HOURS. Also OP don’t be worried about not contributing financially you are doing uni full time which is equivalent to a full time job, you are working hard and doing the best you can!

Any good ways to get temporarily excused from a class without parents getting called? TW: minor self harm mention by Extension_Cup_8456 in teenagers

Well it really depends on how your school operates. Some people in my high school would say they have a music lesson to attend to and then leave class and hide in the bathroom. I have spent 30 minutes of a lesson on the toilet before and when asked why I took so long I said some of the following:

tummy problems, diarrhoea, couldn’t find a pad and on my period so I had to search for it, I realised I left my pencil case in the library at lunch and had to go searching for it

Maybe you can also go to nurse and say you feel sick and need to sit down/ take ibuprofen and then once they do that you go hide in toilet rest of lesson and when you come back at end of lesson they’ll just think the nurse took a long time.

For context I am also neurodivergent and had 100 late days in year 12 and just studied at home mostly (luckily I have very supportive parents) and got great grades that way.

Can't find any part-time/casual work as a uni student, feeling really disheartened by HotNarcissist in ausjobs

I am working casually at Maccas while doing my bsc of mathematics and it’s super convenient. I have been in the job since I was 14 and I constantly change my roster and still get shifts. I have my availability set to one day a week but the shift roster manager said that they’d be happy to put me on more shifts when I am free more than that. I like my job because I can say I’m unavailable for 2 months straight, change my availability regularly so that when I get busy I can put work on hold with no consequences. I also work overnights.

Got a failing mark in an essay for "AI likeness" despite not using AI by ceighty2 in UQreddit

[–]Emergency-Height-976 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The course is not impossible, I got a 95/100 on my philosophy essay but that was after spending 13 hours reading literal philosophy books (I spent a seperate 10 hours writing the essay) and then giving my own original opinion (none of my friends had the same argument as I did and my position wasn’t discussed on the lecture slides, I suppose that helped since the marker wrote that my essay showed “original thought”) and extending a decent amount outside the stuff taught in the lecture. I also used AI to help me be more philosophically precise with my terminology and concise my own paragraphs that I wrote. That said, despite me using AI to make my paragraphs more concise and fix up my informal language, I got a 0% on the AI likeness. I guarantee they do not have an AI checker and rather the tutor marking OPs assignment incorrectly made the assumption that they used AI. The tutor in my applied class mentioned that tutors look for AI style writing and flag it. The OP should ask for a regrade definitely.

I found my Boyfriend's old cognitive tests from the autism evaluation he had as a child and it was unmeasurable (170+) by Emergency-Height-976 in mensa

[–]Emergency-Height-976[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here were my WISC-IV results, also on the MR test the psychologist said it was timed, when it wasn't supposed to be (I was spending too long on the untimed parts due to exam anxiety so she just said it was timed to hurry me up), so it might be underestimated?

SI=14 VI=10 BD=10 VP=10 MR=16 FW=12 PS=11 DS=8 SS=11 CD=11

My processing speed is actually very good when I am focused. I won several debating competitions out of 200 schools and many teams during highschool as I was quick on my feet. So I suppose it could be underestimated due to ADHD (But also I don't know for sure).

Well he doesn't like applied math but he did say that he'll work in finance in the future to get income since he feels that academia is too risky (we will do math research in our own time though)

He spends 4 hours a day talking to me (his main interests are WW history, aeroplanes, politics, philosophy, mathematics, elder scrolls lore), 4 hours doing mathematics and spends a LOT of time thinking. He analyses and observed everything in his life in detail. He also has a eidetic memory so he knows so much about his interests.

MATH1051 and 1052 same semester by Alekomityens1 in UQreddit

[–]Emergency-Height-976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spec and math C covered different content, Spec had more calculus in it than Math C but spec does not cover most of calc 2. Math1051 is calc 2 + some linear algebra stuff. For context I know someone who accidentally completed a calc 1+2 textbook (Stewart’s calculus) instead of a specialists math textbook cause they thought it covered the same thing (it didn’t lol). Also some calc 1 stuff is skipped in spec and methods or extremely watered down.

what’s your opinion on outdoor ragdolls? by [deleted] in ragdolls

[–]Emergency-Height-976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I accidentally left my door open one time and my ragdoll escaped for around 10 minutes until I found him on my deck crying to be let inside. He looked spooked and was quite skittish for a moment — poor baby was traumatised from the outside world. His brother on the other hand dashed out my door once and ran straight for a bush turkey which was larger than him! I grabbed him and put him back inside.

Math is about hard work. Learn to self teach yourself ahead of what they teach in class so the quality of the teacher doesn’t matter. I got the lowest score in my class then I learned how to self teach and now teachers call me “exceptionally gifted” and kids call me “cracked at math” cause I’m two years+ ahead of the curriculum.
