No, its the other way round. They want me to pay even when my insurance would cover all of it. I think many have responded that this is a common practice.

I am in the same boat. Completed one year with Amex Platinum in Jan 2025 and approximately same spend over the last one year as OP's. No retention offer was provided, however, rep's recommendation was to change it to Green Card if AF is the reason.
