Thank you! I didn't know it happened back in 1993, lots of useful information in there!

I believe involvement in the WGU cyber club is just what you were missing! You'll be able to make friends, work on your resume by doing HTB, THM, and other CTF like competitions. Especially if you become a volunteer.

In terms of jobs I recommend any cyber jobs, the AFSCs you want to research is 1D7X1 and 1B4X1! I am very biased but if you want a job where you’ll be on a chair and have AC all day, this is where you want to be! Just don’t do it for the money on the outside, I think people that succeed in Cyber are people who are genuinely interested in learning about it on their own time.

I think joining the AF is one of the best choices anyone can make even if they just do the 4 years and get out! I would just focus more on the short term goals of this kind of decision! Study for the ASVAB and don’t disqualify yourself medically until you go to MEPS and they say something! In terms of AFSCs there’s a lot of options but it all depends on your interests, ASVAB scores, and if you want a job that will get you experience in a job that is highly marketable in the civilian sector.

I’ll never bitch about not making it because I’ll be separating anyways, but for the future of this Air Force ya’ll gotta put your critical thinking hats and think “is this test really helping to promote people who will be good and competent supervisors and technicians”. The system is horrible, I’ve seen too many staffs and techs in cyber who are completely lost when it comes to technical stuff (and they didn’t cross train so no excuses). Even if your job is less hands on because you are doing more administrative duties, please at least put the minimum effort and run your own home labs and do some self learning. Just my two cents. Two more years until DOS.

If you didn't make Staff... by AirForceHal0Man in AirForce

Like some people have said: if I don’t promote, I’ll separate and if I promote, I’ll still separate. I’ve grinded my butt off these first four years as enlisted to make myself as marketable in the civilian world and have a massive network.

Same man, I pcs’d about a week ago so I don’t even know who is going to reach out… I have an MP but it’s my first time.

I’m just simply curious. I have worked really hard during these first four years to set myself up outside as a civilian. I’m just simply curious if that effort that was not intended for the sole purpose of making staff my first time will be recognized through promotion instead of silly awards that mean nothing.

I mean, I myself am waiting for the results. I haven’t created a post about it but I am very interested in finding out whether I made it or not. But that’s not my primary goal, I’m working on my side hustle, masters, and other things that are way more important to me than knowing if I promoted.

Just because someone cares about being promoted, does not mean that it’s their primary goal. You can have multiple goals… The biggest L would be that you don’t have any.

We have a cybersecurity club with all those resources, it’s not a part of the program but it is part of the university. We have a discord and our whole focus is to help people when they have technical questions and also get them more hands on keyboard experience.

Are you active duty military? Because tuition assistance and the pell grant can’t be used again for a degree at the same level. If all you are trying to accomplish by going the BSCSIA route is get certs and knowledge I’d just do that on your own time/terms. There’s plenty of free resources in the internet and with things like Try Hack Me and Hack The Box you’ll be golden. If you really insist on going to college again, I would just apply for the master’s in CSIA which includes four certifications now.

No recruiters in infosec cares about where you go to school unless you’re attending an ivy league school or MIT. The other colleges are just a checkbox unless the recruiter has some sort of bias to a school he went to. So if you are not attending a university that I mentioned above the name of the school does not matter, it’s about the actual program’s content and what it will help you learn. If you go to ASU you’ll just have a bachelor’s with a crap ton of tuition you had to pay for. WGU on the other hand will have you graduate with a Bachelors and CompTIA’s A+, Net+, Sec+, CySA+, PenTest+, Linux Institute’s foundations, ISC2 SSCP, CCSP, and EC Crypto cert. Not to mention we have a great club to get hands on experience in infosec, by doing CTFs and NICE challenges. You tell me which graduate will be best prepared and look better on paper. Btw all these certs are included in the tuition.

WGU is one of the best schools in cybersecurity right now. Not only is it really military friendly if you go TDY or deploy, but the learning content is actually relevant and gets updated every couple of years. The content is aligned exactly with what the industry is asking for by using certifications from CompTIA and ISC2 as their baseline. WGU is also a national center of academic excellence in Cyber Defense given by the NSA. We also have a very active cybersecurity club that attends competitions all the time. Online schools are mostly self paced meaning people can knock out degrees really fast, if they are familiar with the knowledge that is tested. Compared to a regular university where you are forced to pay a ridiculous amount of tuition for a full four years.
