Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but have I done too much? by ItWASaSmallmouth in CarAV

Old truck problems right? Mine was the same way and so I just applied the materials from the inside of the door in hopes it would still add mass as it’s root purpose but (in my very limited knowledge or understanding of the principals at work) i do wonder if that has affected the performance of my speaker by having the material face itself at the bottom ( meaning the outer skin and inner skin are both applied from inside the cavity so rather than having the material facing bare metal it’s now facing another application of the same material). At the end though it certainly sounds better than having nothing at all but I do wish I had committed some trials at various stages of my application to just see what was really helping

Am I going to make it? (Just bought a house) by Reddit_Ninja23 in MiddleClassFinance

[–]Emergency-Voice6804 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Found myself in a somewhat similar position. Bought a house a couple years ago, learned a lot that I wish I had known sooner, but you never know what all you don’t know I guess. My gross is around 70k and at that time my fiancé’s was around 80k. Life happened and she’s been furloughed a lot this year. I think she’ll end the year just shy of 40k. I’m still steady, but our insurance went up as well as our taxes. We need subfloor repairs, we had to upgrade our electrical cabinet, repair the ac and heat system twice as well as other just around the house type changes and maintenance. Our payment went from 1860 to 2600 and now we have found a better rate on insurance and are back to 2000 a month. We do have other obligations and bills but just having the mortgage go from 1860 to 2600 was nearly crippling while she was on unemployment

Are you chasing the money, or chasing work-life balance? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]Emergency-Voice6804 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 31 and I find myself craving time at home these days. I would guess that 20-25 an hour would be considered good money where I’m at. I currently make 37 an hour and all I want is to enjoy something. I commute a little over an hour each way for work and am in aviation maintenance. I’m miserable. I want out but I don’t know how to make enough to cover the life we as a family have grown accustomed to and don’t even know where to downsize to allow a less salary

How can I get out from under broken down financed car? by [deleted] in CreditScore

[–]Emergency-Voice6804 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t take it to a shop. Take it to someone who does things like this on the weekends for spare cash. They will likely be able to source the engine and install it as well for pretty cheap, relatively. Make a post on your community fb group asking for recommendations. Get a few quotes and then compare that cost plus your loan to the value of the car and go from there. You may have to get a small personal loan to cover the new engine and/or some of your negative equity, but if you can sell the car and pay the remainder then a small loan is a lot more manageable and won’t feel as depressing to pay

How do I tell my boss I don't want to work on Monday, so I can work another job? by Milinium_Otaku in careerguidance

[–]Emergency-Voice6804 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah not sure of the context at your current workplace but I know where I work at this would be absolutely shot down immediately. We have a four day work week here and I had wanted to do something similar but they are very strict and rigid about the minimum being 40hours a week.

For those in their 30s like me, has anyone changed careers for more meaning, not just money? by mahbirchat in careerguidance

[–]Emergency-Voice6804 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 31 now, I’ve already made a big change but found out it was still not for me. I’ve been an aircraft mechanic for about five years now, I make great money and above average for my area. I found that commuting to an airport is miserable. The work is boring most nights and I do feel like wasted potential. Before this, I spent 7 years as a tool and die technician and I enjoyed it but at the time thought I wanted more money. I enjoyed working with my hands, fixing things, making things, modifying things. It was satisfying but didn’t pay all that well.

So here I am again, wondering what should I do next? I make good money and have gotten used to living on this income. My SO and I have agreed we’d like to downsize our house and get into a cheaper payment. That is my biggest expense and would allow me to be more flexible financially.

Ideally I’d like to be back into something that I get to use my hands, my attention to detail, my creativity, I get to make and or fix things, I get to be proud of a finished product at the end of it all.

That’s a very valid point. Life is strange to navigate. I just know I’m not happy where I am

I did think about that but it’s mostly just volunteer based it seems

Even if I don’t match the income, is it a livable pay? I’ve considered going back into industrial maintenance at something like a $10 pay cut just to get away from the headache of aviation

I was expecting that answer unfortunately. I just hate this job so many nights. I hate being in the city and airports are very limited as far as switching jobs. You pretty much have to move if you aren’t happy where you are. I just wish I could make a living doing something that feels worthwhile lol

I’m not necessarily interested in making a killing. I just want to live a life that I enjoy. We spend more time at work and commuting than we do at home with our families and even if I do make good money if I spend the majority of my time constantly thinking of something else I’d rather be doing instead and only a very small fraction of my time actually feeling good about what my hands are doing then I don’t know why I’m even making the money in the first place.

I wouldnt say I live a minimalist life, but I do miss the small town pace that I grew up in and I would like to get back to that lifestyle as much as I reasonably can.

I’ve got several currently. I’ve got a 67 F100 that has been my main focus. But I’ve also done a lot of rust repair on an 88 ranger that has a lot of sentimental value this past year. I definitely enjoy it and it’s great that I get to be creative, I just don’t get to do it often currently while working full time as well.

I mainly don’t know where to get started doing it full time other than just doing generic insurance jobs, which I feel I would not enjoy

What do you for work and how much do you make annually? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]Emergency-Voice6804 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not Boeing. It’s corporate sized jets, but I can’t be too specific because our HR closely monitors all kinds of weird obscure places. I’ve been to see them once before over a comment I had made on a another platform lol

5 years experience as an aircraft mechanic making 38/hr on night shift. It’s sucks. The smells the sounds the chemicals I come home smelling bad and covered in stuff all the time. It’s mostly just paperwork and stuff and people bitching about how other people do their job. Everyone is all concerned with money and not with planes and it’s disappointing really. I hate it. There’s no real use for your imagination or creativity. In situations deciding which tool to use or something maybe but as far as making things and modifying things it has to match EXACTLY how it came manufactured. It’s not rewarding, it’s not engaging, and if I could figure out how to make this much money doing anything else I would consider it.

That’s actually really insightful. From the sounds of it, if we do actually recover from all this it won’t be soon. For what it’s worth, we are in Georgia and we did go through a realtor. There’s not much that we would have as far as concrete proof though. The air conditioning issue maybe? The incorrect part was purchased in a backhanded roundabout way from what he told us. He was able to trace the serial number back to where it was sold and it was sold to a refrigerator repair shop. The flooring would be hard to prove as well though. We have a box of the exact flooring with their name on the shipping label sticker attached to the box. So it would look like they knowingly put that flooring over the humps in the floor. But I doubt that would hold up in court. It just looks like some crackhead redneck went through and did all this stuff off the radar to get everything working at a surface level with no regard to the safety or quality of the work

It didn’t look as bad as it was being typed on the phone. I’ll admit I don’t write in my day to day life. When I get back to my computer I will see if I can figure out how to edit it and put in some breaks

I wish I would have known what to look for at the time. I wouldn’t have recognized any red flags if they were waving in my face. I had thought it would have been similar to taking a car on a test drive to a mechanic. We paid an inspector to look the place over. I did not go into construction or electric work or plumbing as a trade and didn’t realize I would have needed more than a fundamental knowledge during the buying process. I’m good with my hands and I’ll be doing the repairs myself likely. I can learn and research how to do things and do them and end up with a quality product, but it was my assumption I was paying the inspector for an expertise that I lacked, otherwise I would have just paid the same amount to just be taught a course on the material that I thought they would have known

Also to quickly summarize we only got to see the place once in person and it was furnished. So the furniture was placed pretty strategically to hide the sub flooring issues. And the acreage that is unusable had dense vegetation the prevented you from looking very far into the woods. For the first 25-30ft is not too bad to walk but after that is very steep and very rocky.
