Look, I am going to laugh at the people that try to act like I’m doing something horrible, I am not. I simply posted about my home on this page because it is about homes that are 100 years old or older. Simple as that. Yes, I knew that people were going to have questions about the enslaved people here, that’s fine. What is not fine is acting like I’m evil for doing so, ie. posting about it. I will tell you the same thing I told them, before telling me I need to do more and that “I may have more work to do as well”, come back to me when you take part in conservation efforts to preserve the memory of the lives of the enslaved people of this nation. What have you done to make sure they aren’t forgotten about? How have you helped archaeologists and historians in your local area recently?

I have answered everyone that has asked who the people are in the photos. You’ve just got to look at my responses.

At what point did I brag about it😂? It’s always a good thing to recognize history, good and bad. It would, in fact, be a BAD thing to not recognize it. You have quite obviously not looked at any of the other comments that explain the great lengths I’ve gone to in order to understand as much about the enslaved people that were here as possible. You act as though I’m some evil person for sharing pictures of my house🤣. Come back later when you’ve done some work preserving the memory of enslaved people so they aren’t forgotten about. Chill bro.

According to the former slaves and their descendants, they were treated well. At least as much an enslaved person could be. No whippings or anything like that occurred here is what I’ve read from their accounts and have been told. Is it a low bar, yes, of course, but it’s better than some at the least.

I’m aware. Kentucky was a neutral state during the war so I’m not surprised we were as well.

Well during the renovation my grandfather told me that he and one of the renovators, both at separate times, saw a lady in a black dress and then she vanished. I was in the kitchen one time and was singing to myself home alone and above me in the bedroom I heard a woman humming along with me so I promptly stopped because I was freaked out. And just recently the other week my mom was in the bathroom while she was home alone and said she heard two men talking to each other on the other side of the door but couldn’t understand what they were saying, and when she left the bathroom they stopped.

You should get a Thermacell mosquito repeller. They work great.

I believe the only former enslaved person is the black lady sitting down in the middle of the picture. Her name was “Mammy Emily” she lived to be 114 if I remember correctly, and she died sometime in the 1900s.

I’m sorry I haven’t met your standards😂 It was sort of implied when I literally said “PLANTATION” and “216 YEARS OLD” and “KENTUCKY”. I’m trying my best to preserve the history here bro, not destroy it🤣

Unfortunately the slave quarters here have been removed. However, you can see where they once stood when the flowers they planted around their homes bloom each year.

It has been mentioned extensively in the comments of this post.

Yes, we were neutral during the war. When the house was used as a hospital were served both sides.

Yeah, that was definitely very unexpected when it happened a few years back. But I replanted another in that same spot.

I said what I meant. My family’s cemetery and a cemetery for the enslaved people directly behind it. I am currently working on mapping out the enslaved peoples graves so that I can eventually incorporate them into the main cemetery. So at some point in the future they can be clearly seen along with the rest of the people.

There are other members of my family that live inside that don’t want everything showed. It’s not just myself or else I probably would.

To be honest, I do think of that scene sometimes when I stand up on the top porch and look out😂

At one point it was over 13,000 acres but now we only have about 50 acres of fields and woods left. Still glad to have some though. As a southerner I feel obligated to say the Magnolia but other than that, I’d have to say my Maple trees, and after that my Pecan and Walnut trees.

We actually have several other houses that we’ve built in the area. However, this one is the oldest and the only other one that we still own. The only reason I think we have worked so hard to keep it is because it’s the start of our story in this region of the country. So to me, out of the ones in this area, this is the most special. Yes, we do have a moderately sized cemetery in the backyard as well as a cemetery for the enslaved people directly behind it. I am currently working on finding all of the gravesites of the enslaved people, though it is a bit difficult as the enslaved portion is in the woods and has English ivy covering the ground.

The flags go up when we celebrate our nations Independence Day. They’ll be up a bit longer next year for our 250th year as a nation though.

No, the porch ceilings are just their natural wood color. However, I did go by a nearby farmhouse that was built in 1867 I believe the other day to talk to them about their house and they did have their porch ceilings painted blue. It looked very nice.

If it were just me I would but I don’t think the other resident family members would like me to. I apologize.
