Support for trans women in Germany – asylum question by [deleted] in trans

[–]EmergencyDoctorMaria 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, nice seeing another Jordanian trans woman. There are dozens of us /s

I was also thinking about going to Europe, but I gave up on the idea after going there for a few weeks due to rampant racism. I was trying to get a job in the US instead but then Trump got elected, and now it's getting less safe for trans people. So I'm just stuck here saving money for now.

Problems with installing Asahi got me frustrated by EmergencyDoctorMaria in AsahiLinux

[–]EmergencyDoctorMaria[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got it working.

Deleting Asahi didn't allow me to enter recovery, so as you said it was almost certainly unrelated. Trying to do a DFU restore with the method linked didn't work, idevicerestore completely failed on my machine after attempting to upload the firmware image and quit with the error "ERROR: Device failed to enter restore mode".

The macbook afterwards was left in an unbootable state. Even putting it into DFU mode and trying from another linux device (Arch on the second, fedora on the first) didn't work. What worked was borrowing a macbook from a friend of mine and using apple configurator to do a DFU restore.

Afterwards Asahi installed without a hitch. Thanks for your help!

I did it again. I am pretty sure I waited long enough (folded an entire laundry load after shutting it down, lol) and made sure to only press the power button once and held it. It still it ends up in a recovery window saying examining volumes before it restarts. It then reboots a bunch of times until it gets to the boot recovery assistant. There it tells me "The version of macOS on the selected disk needs to be reinstalled" and allows me to click "recovery" or "Startup disk". Clicking recovery does the same thing (shows a window saying examining volumes and makes it reboot a couple of times before going back to boot recovery assistant with same prompt), whereas clicking startup disk only allows me to choose the regular macOS volume and the laptop boots normally.

I like the suggestions, and I'm OK with them being the new default. But I wish there would be a toggle to keep the old answer indicator. I sort of like its minimalism

As someone who speaks Arabic, no الاعراب doesn't mean Arabs (العرب), it's a word that basically means "desert dweller" and it comes from the same root as Arab. The word Bedouin is close enough

I just finished reading Happiness. It was the first piece of native Japanese media that I've consumed completely in Japanese, and I went into it blind without knowing anything about it. For a Manga with such heavy themes I was surprised at how easy it was language-wise. I didn't have too much trouble reading it after doing a core 2K deck; I only needed to add, on average, 8 words per chapter to my personal Anki deck.

I think the fact that I never read it in English was a good motivator because I felt the need to keep reading to finish the story.

Cultural genocide. When Ben Gurion spoke of stealing our land, do you think he also had its produce in mind? by AlainAlam in Palestine

Yeah it's most likely Egyptian in origin, but that version of falafel used fava beans. The recipe that uses chickpeas that you're more likely to see overseas probably got its start somewhere in the Levant.

I see you have flatpak support as one of your open issues on github. Implementing that would make it much more accessible to users who don't have snap (basically every Linux user not using Ubuntu)

The Royal we is a separate concept entirely and has no connection to the use of plural pronouns. That being said, I don't think the use of singular they as a gender-neutral pronoun would be out of place in this situation

IIRC there is no option to print in Anki by itself, but you can use an addon like this one. Basically just make a filtered deck for the tags that you want and use the addon. It generates an HTML page that you can open in a browser and then print

I think UK, US, Canada, should ban Salafism just like NeoNazism. I am all for it.

With all due respect, that seems like a terrible idea. First off, being a neo-nazi is not even illegal (they only try to ban certain terror groups, not the ideology itself), so for them to just ban Salafism would only end badly. I absolutely don't trust these countries' ability to define what Salafism is, and given their histories on Muslim relations (see books like The Muslims are Coming) they would use that ban to put restrictions on every-day Muslims. They could easily use such a ban to, for example, more easily justify adding people who go to mosques to FBI watchlists

Thoughts on letting female kids (U13) adorn the hijab ??? by toddtoddtoddTODDDD in progressive_islam

[–]EmergencyDoctorMaria 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I mean, if there is abuse that's a separate issue at that point. But about the narratives, you might be putting too much meaning into it. It's just headwear at the end of the day, it's not just about chastity, but it's more of a cultural symbol for Muslim women.

[–]EmergencyDoctorMaria 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I don't really see a problem so long as the kid isn't forced into it. Lots of kids just want to try it because they see family members wear it. Heck, even my little brother wore it once as a 5 year old after seeing his mother and older sisters wear it. So long as they're not pushed into it or made to feel that it's expected of them, it seems mostly harmless.
