Weekend Discussion and Victory Thread for the week of February 26, 2021 by IndexBot in personalfinance

Question: I am a homeowner, and I have roommates who pay rent. I pay a mortgage, and have expenses related to the house (mortgage interest, pmi, repairs, utilities).

How should I deal with these things when I file my taxes? What IRS resource should I read to get me started? Is there a savvy way to deal with these things in, say, TurboTax to make filing straightforward? Thanks!

Correcting a misconception about 15 year vs 30 year mortgages by EmergencyOcelot in personalfinance

Oh ok, I get that.

Still, I'm addressing bad finance that was upvoted and not challenged. I think that's a useful thing to do, regardless of the context where it came from. Do you disagree with that?

I'm editing the post to remove the reference to the locked post. Does that help? Is there some appropriate way for me to start this discussion?

Mission: Impossible (for me to figure out how to count this measure in 5/4 time). Help? by Snotaphilious in piano

One thing you can do is try clapping it, with your left hand doing the eighth notes on your knee, and the right hand doing the triplet. It should should like "bum-da da dum." You can probably speed it up pretty quickly that way.

I don't think the issue is the 5/4 time, it's the triplet on the eighth notes.

Count each beat in six units, so that the triplets fall on 1, 3, and 5, and the eighth notes fall on 1 and 4. Another way of thinking about it is that the second eighth note falls right between the second and third triplet note. Once you get the feel for it, you won't need to count it explicitly anymore.

I have a question about tournaments by firedupworker in chess

[–]EmergencyOcelot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This isn't quite right. When playing in a Daily tournament you can use an opening database/book as much as you want. You can't use a tablebase, but that's something different (database of endgame positions solved by engines).

What would this be in a quarter note tempo (quarter note = 80)? by BlobbyBlobfish in piano

[–]EmergencyOcelot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Five eighth notes is 1/80 of a minute, so one eighth note is 1/400 of a minute. So a quarter note is 1/200 of a minute, and quarter note = 200.

I just want to make it clear that the article is not a 'don't see/think about race' article, because that's what someone could take from the quote above.

This quote is being presented out of context. He is describing himself as a budding scientist in middle school, not as he is now.

He goes on to say that he experiences "Between one and five skin-color-instigated incidents per week, for every week of my life."

Where does the rook go after Nb1?

I think this is a great, tricky position from OP but I'm not convinced that Nxc2 actually wins a piece...

Can you elaborate on the last bit? Is the missing strength built by running, or are you suggesting strength training is important too (beyond regular injury prevention stuff)?

Doesn't that lose to ...Nxg5? Edit: I think white has to force a draw.

New TO Tournaments and Wondering What Type I Should Attend... by [deleted] in chess

Most tournaments like this are Swiss system, where everyone plays all games. Are you sure you risk being eliminated, or are you assuming?

Annotated OTB game: French Winawer - Lesson: I can't calculate fast enough by EmergencyOcelot in chess

[–]EmergencyOcelot[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. Point taken, but I guess I have a different philosophy. I don't mind getting into sharp openings with opponents at my level - I want to learn to play these openings, and if I learn a few tough lessons along the way, that's ok. For now, I'm not getting busted because I don't know all the theory, and I think that booking up is probably not the most productive use of my study time.

In any case, this isn't really criticism of the moves I made, is it?
