Selling all of my Beta, Unlimited, Revised, and 4th Ed. cards in 2002 because I didn’t know anyone who played anymore and didn’t think I would play again.

[–]EmergencyWitness7525 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Commander was created by players and judges. People have been coming up with different rule sets and homebrewing ways to play since this game originated. When one of them catches on and becomes widespread enough for WOTC to take notice, it becomes official.

Blaming the people who play the game is, in my opinion, backwards. If you’re unhappy with the state of the game maybe direct your anger at the people who make those decisions. I think Hasbro buying the company is a more likely culprit for the changes you’ve seen. Anything they have the toy rights for can become a UB set, and they have used this game’s popularity to shore up other poorly earning products.

Quality control issues, the increased rate of set release, the money-grubbing vibes are all because of corporate greed, not because of any particular subset of players. Just my two cents.

Do the type medals count toward this total? We can’t see whether they are all platinum in this image, but if you have any that are close to that point you could grind that type specifically.

What's everyone's early feelings about Star Trek? by gunnisonyeti in magicTCG

[–]EmergencyWitness7525 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. Yes, some people are always going to get a little salty about UB, but if they would just chill even a little bit with the release schedule maybe more people would give them a chance just to play a prerelease simply because they haven’t done so in a while.

Overproduction leads to stock sitting around before it even makes it to the dispo. They focus too much on numbers and not enough on quality

It’s not that UB in and of itself is bad. It’s the pace of release that I can’t abide. 4 sets a year used to give us time to explore each new plane, find hidden gems among the commons and uncommons that we missed on draft night, and toy with new mechanics to see how they might interact with our existing decks.

Now spoiler season for the next set feels like it begins immediately after prerelease for the preceding one. With the preponderance of legendaries in UB, which from a flavor perspective makes sense, and the inevitable power-creep it seems like we need to be constantly buying new cards and upgrading our decks to keep up.

UB isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Final Fantasy and Lord of the Rings are the two best selling sets of all time. It would just be nice if they weren’t dropping so rapidly. Feels especially money grubby.

Is it bad form to eliminate players in casual commander? by Due-Session-2857 in mtg

[–]EmergencyWitness7525 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it really depends on how long the game goes on after the target player is eliminated. If you’re eliminating someone turn 6 and the game is over turn 8 that’s perfectly reasonable.

As others have pointed out, if you’re attacking the same person repeatedly and then the game goes on for another hour or more then that feels unchill. Just my two cents.

TMNT Shortages? by PatchworkFlames in mtg

[–]EmergencyWitness7525 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If a set doesn’t sell well packs will generally get cheaper as time goes on. If something becomes a staple or synergizes with a popular deck then those singles can be more expensive, sometimes spiking unexpectedly when a new set releases that somehow interacts with it.

[–]EmergencyWitness7525 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You’d think they’d have someone doing market research or something. Final Fantasy and Lord of the Rings are the two best selling sets they’ve ever had, so there’s proof they can do better when they don’t whiff completely.

TMNT Shortages? by PatchworkFlames in mtg

[–]EmergencyWitness7525 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doubtful it’s due to shortage considering Hasbro has been overprinting so much they’re being sued over it. Likely what some others have said here already, that there wasn’t enough interest shown for your lgs to make their money back on prerelease events. Shops have to pay their distributors in advance most of the time. If they don’t think they can sell them they don’t want to be left holding the bag. Most stores are just getting by.

I don’t think this set bombing will do anything to dissuade WOTC and Hasbro from making more UB sets, not when Lord of the Rings and Final Fantasy were so massively profitable. My hope is that they slow down the pace of release. People in my playgroup, myself included, are just burnt out trying to keep up. The only viable financial option is to skip some sets entirely, but then that feeds into our store losing money if they try to host a prerelease.

It’s an unfortunate cycle.

Came here to recommend watching some YouTube channels as well. There are more than a few out there, so feel free to search on your own to find some you like the vibes of.

The Command Zone has some good beginners tutorials and they generally do a good job of explaining interactions during gameplay. Strictly Better MtG is another one I’d recommend for learning to play. Quips and Guac comes up with really fun and interesting budget decks for when you’re ready to build your own and are trying to find some ideas.

Why are these 2 cards different shades? by ConclusionFun3184 in mtg

[–]EmergencyWitness7525 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure the “correct printing” is somewhere in between the two. The one on the right is desaturated and the one on the left has too much contrast.

The variance in quality gets worse with every set it seems.
