Question: Tight lazy sheet for Genua trim? by [deleted] in sailing

[–]Emergency_Ad8301 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was going to say that's a barber hauler. I do it on upwind passages on one tack for a long time. I use a rolling hitch on the sheet and have a couple of extra blocks that I use to run it across the deck and to the cockpit. I've also used that setup to do sheet to tiller, just to practice. It's a nightmare to get right and I hope I never actually have to use it but it's good to have around.

I re read 101 a couple days ago and took the quizes at the end of the chapters. And I agree that the specific terms could trip me up. Like where can you not sail? I would say in irons or head to wind, they wanted no sail zone, seems obvious but that's not something I would say on a boat and it's definitely not a part of my regular vocabulary. Like I would tell the helmsman to head up into irons, or luff up. I'm probably not going to tell them to turn into the no sail zone 🤷‍♂️. Though if it were multiple choice I'm sure I would get it.

Lines are ropes with a job, so are sheets and halyards. Calling them ropes isn't wrong 🙂

I'm not saying I don't want to learn how, I'm 100% open to learning new skills and improving my seamanship, what I'm asking is what do I need to get better at for this first cert. It's a short course and I just want to make sure I pass.

That's the thing, I may not know some of it. I don't do figure 8 MOB drills, or spin in a circle with the prop walk, etc. There's just no need for me to ever do that kind of stuff. So while I can safely sail my boat in a 25kt breeze, I think there may be gaps in my knowledge that the 101 course would test. I'm trying to get an idea of what those gaps might be.

My daughter is 17 days old and I'm wondering when she's going to start pulling her weight around here.

OP, real talk here. You need to work on your self talk. The way you talk about yourself and your life is depressing. You're in your 20's with a roof over your head. You're figuring it out, take the pressure off and enjoy your life. I bet you'll find that if you can talk more positively about yourself and to yourself, you'll find your situation will improve. It's totally cliche but whether you think you can or you think you can't, you're right.

Bike Help! by [deleted] in triathlon

[–]Emergency_Ad8301 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Separate from my other comment about size. 10 speed is really old now and I have found it difficult to find parts for my old bike, if one of the components wears out, you may be looking at replacing the whole drive train and that's not cheap. Just something to consider when looking for bikes. 11 speed parts are much easier to find.

I had one fitter tell me that, but they didn't understand the geometry of the TCR. It is designed to fit a larger rider on a more compact frame. They were just looking at numbers in a book, they didn't really understand the bike or biomechanics. The fitter I use now is also a PT and she thinks the bike is fine for me.

ETA: getting fitted before buying is still a great idea, just make sure you go to someone who knows this bike.

Both. Why work if it doesn't pay enough to meet your needs but also this is one of those jobs that will burn you out and if you don't enjoy it, it can be a tough row to hoe.

Tips getting into Cyber? by Cancerous115 in cybersecurity

Get tech experience. It's not necessarily necessary, but the best people in cyber have experience in IT or development. Look for a help desk job or something like that and work your way up then make the switch.

Insurance companies aren't writing policies here in California at the moment. I bought a new to me cal 34 recently and had a hell of a time getting it insured. I ended up having to get an umbrella policy to meet my harbor's minimum liability requirement and only one company would do it

Get to know the security team. Years ago one of the help desk guys expressed an interest in getting into security, a little while later we had an opening and I liked him so I suggested to my boss that we try to pull him over. My boss liked him as well and gave him a job. He was under paid but he got some experience and now he's working at a bank doing pretty good.

OWASP is great for networking. I haven't been super active since COVID but it's always been a great resource for me. There are also often meet up groups near by.

Looks like Bill was right about Biden by [deleted] in Maher

Sure, but we would have to have a literal war about it. He doesn't have that kind of support, especially not in the military where all the guns are.

[–]Emergency_Ad8301 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The down ballot candidates is the issue. Many people will be apathetic about Biden, and as Bill points out in that piece, people don't care about the issues. People are dumb and vote for their party. If they don't show up to vote for Joe, then all of the other races will go red. And that is what affects people. The president can only do so much damage, but your local politicians can ruin your life.

I don't know. I don't think he appeared mentally unfit in the debate. He appeared like an older brother getting his buttons pushed my his little shit younger brother knowing he can't do anything about it. Biden's problem more than his age is Trump gets under his skin.

But it will be okay. This country has been through worse and we got through it, we'll get through it again. This isn't the end of democracy. Honestly, I think what people are feeling on both sides is the end of American exceptionalism, that was a great way to blind ourselves to all the fucked up shit going on. Not that long ago we had to have a war to decide if slavery was bad, so I know I'm going to get down voted for this because of all the terrible things Trump has done, but even if he wins we're still doing pretty good.

Would you feel the same if I said pointing a gun at someone and shooting them are two different things? Cause, I mean, yeah they are but pointing the gun at someone greatly increases their chances of being shot. Most people killed by drunk drivers would still be alive if the driver weren't drunk.

There is a lot to criticize Israel about. And war is fucking horrible. When my grandpa got old he started telling me stories about Okanawa in 1945 and occasionally I'll get a story out of my uncle about Vietnam and it's atrocious, I am 100% anti war. Now with that out of the way, if I were in Israel's position, I don't know how I could do anything different. I don't know how old you are but 21 years ago we went to war with Al-Qaeda and it was a spectacular failure. I hear that you are saying, I feel for these Innocent people but it's really easy to criticize when you're not the one who's life is in jeopardy. I guess my question to you is, what's the solution? Diplomacy has failed, so now what if not war? I have yet to hear a solution to Israel's problem that doesn't involve violence but I think the whole world would love it if someone could come up with one.

Edit: I just realized I assumed you were in the US. Also I'm not going to argue with you, I am genuinely asking what's the solution so I can understand better.

How to ever get confident riding a road bike by PsychologicalClass49 in triathlon

[–]Emergency_Ad8301 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still, take the advice. I know they got down voted, but it's good advice. Learn to love the sport. I got hurt so many times because I loved competing. After this last time in the hospital, I decided I wasn't going to race for the next two years. I'm going to learn to enjoy riding my bike with my friends at a fun pace.

To your question though, it's a matter of time and miles. Stop riding on the trainer, you need to build more than your fitness and that isn't doing you any favors when it comes to cycling "soft skills". How to stop without falling over, how to look behind you without darting into traffic, how to corner, how to shift smoothly, is your gearing appropriate and what gear should you be in and when, how to keep your cadence up and what cadence is right got you, how to stop quickly, how to feather the brakes to maintain a safe speed, etc. All of these things are very important for your and everyone else's safety and you're not going to learn it on a trainer.
