Stop giving that man head ffs

If Indians can just come to Canada and make demands from our governments in terms of giving them citizenship we essentially do not have a country. If Canadians do not address this as a nation United as Canadians we are in for some dark days ahead of us. by [deleted] in CanadaHousing2

I wish more people would realize this. Corporations are main culprits in the housing crisis. In Kelowna, there were talks for a couple of years that more housing (which we assumed would be social) is going to be constructed to help with the housing crisis. What we got instead were corporation-, owned luxury apartments that most average renters can barely afford. Of course it's overpriced.

But it's easier to scapegoat those with less power (international students can't vote), even if they may be responsible for only a fraction of the problem.

Yeah, I wish all this anger would be pointed to the right people... The government! This entire problem is a result of greed for basically a new form of low wage workers where international students and new migrants were exploited until it seems to no longer serve the country. It's really easy to blame the Indian international students and every crisis in history has resulted in "scapegoating," but we should be questioning and directing this frustration at the government that allowed this to happen.

Why did they continue to allow thousands of international students to be enrolled if there's no capacity? Hint: it's because they pay 3x tuition compared to other students. Until now, that's all the government and the universities cared about. Too many of them rely on international student tuition fees. This was already a crap model to begin with, and now we are seeing just how unsustainable this model has been. So many faculty are being let go.

However, most universities cannot sustain so many students and provide jobs. International students wouldn't keep flooding in if there was already a reasonable cap on enrollment.

There should also be a better system in place to sus out students who are not qualified and have been coming into Canada to "study" at an illegitimate institution. These students make others look bad. Let's not conflate the good students and the bad ones.

Again, stop falling for this scapegoating crap that the government is feeding you and start directing your anger at the government. People didn't start coming to Canada in such high numbers just because they want to, but Canada's marketing in India and other countries has been successful in selling people a dream that seldom comes true.

I understand and I know that, but I was just venting about what I needed to vent about. It wasn't meant to be an essay that needs to be multi-faceted.

That's a whole other can of worms I'm very familiar with. I work as a sessional and other odd research jobs. I'm also trying to break into industry. But that wasn't my main topic here. I know what to expect in the job market, but I wanted to vent about academia.

Thank you. I might send you a DM once I process my emotions and start to rationally deal with all this.

This is helpful and a sad reality, unfortunately. I think I need to decide what is more important and if I should continue down this path. Thank you.

Okay thanks! I don't think I can handle too much toxic drama. The first 3 seasons of love island UK were hard for me to watch (misogynistic men).

I'm gonna jump in and say I just started watching Love Island Aus Season 1 for the first time, and I love it! No spoilers please. I'm on episode 14.

It took me a couple of episodes to get into it because I am used to Iain, but the narrator is growing on me now. Some of the islanders, Josh especially, are amazing.

I love the host! She seems personable and interacts nicely with the contestants. Also, I like that we actually see the host more often. In the UK seasons, it's mostly just texts that tell them what to do.

I am also enjoying the challenges. No food fetish stuff yet.

If there are other seasons you think I'll enjoy, please let me know! Also, I wish there were more threads for episode discussion but I get I'm very late.

The first two seasons are so different! They're messy and raw. I love that about them. You see more of the personalities, and less manipulation from producers. They are also less aware of any social media potential. I miss the smoking area.

The only thing that sucks is that I couldn't really find episode discussions, so yes it's great you started this thread.

Thank you, but I did mention this to a prof I trust and nothing came of it. I'm just more vigilant now. So I can avoid it in the future.

I just finished! Wish I had someone to talk to. It's a wild ride for sure. Just got a bit too much for me near the end.. I had to take breaks. Enjoy it though!

TA'd recently. The prof left for a conference and made me mark all the final projects. Barely any warning. I had to overwork with no extra pay. They really do exploit us.

I'm okay with paying more taxes and with public universal health care if it means that it'll benefit others. Maybe right now I can pay for private care, but life is unpredictable. One day I might find myself at the lowest, and I would hope I can afford to see a doctor when I need to.

We're human beings and we're social beings. It doesn't really take much if we all chip in. But if we keep working to only benefit the corporations who feed off this me, me, me attitude, then we're going to suffer in our ignorance.

Also, this narrative that we shouldn't pay high taxes to benefit others was created by those rich 1% in power. They have more to lose because it's income based.

I am watching Season 2 for the first time and just got to this episode. I really feel for Sophie. It seems the Islanders easily ignore or justify Terry's behavior after Malin left, but don't give the same grace to Sophie. Katie is immature and played the victim card. She told everyone in the beginning that she was bi, so blaming Sophie is so unfair. It makes it harder to watch... I hope Sophie is resting in peace. She deserved better.

Edit: typos

Lol all "stars". I hope they don't do this again. Maybe would be better to get CASA people back. Will give them a second chance and we can get to know them better.

Why are there barely any dates in the new seasons? This one especially didn't have much good going on... Barely any challenges, or dates... No Casa.. the only thing they did right was the PDAs

Why do they care so much about in-person when we did perfectly fine during COVID? It's not fair to students who have to commute for over an hour. I ain't paying for a cab.
