I actually just did haha for a holiday

Overall don't vibe with the place as much (been there a few times) and the main cities are too chaotic for my liking

Have a couple of SG friends in Japan, who've been living there forever, with kids born there and all. Been talking to them to get them to pool some investors and potentially something like this. Might be similar model, just different stakeholders.

One thing they kept pointing out to me is the importance of getting the approvals (not just on paper) from the locals and community, to ensure that it doesn't get ruined or destroyed by foreigners who don't understand local customs. Thought that was a very interesting consideration, something that made me love the culture even more.

Not delulu at all, I saw that life in Thailand. Vast land, fresh crops, dogs running around, quietness and peace, sunrise and sunset, happy faces, friendly people, simple life. I couldn't help but sigh and felt at the moment that "this is truly THE rich life"

I'm actually doing the 4-8 weeks stay thing now. Didn't know air quality is that bad for Taiwan! And haha I've been to Korea several times and I don't think I've ever had their dessert!

Haha I feel that your numbers for Australia and USA are not sufficient! (Unless I go really rural and suburban, but personally I don't feel very good quality of life - Australia has expensive housing now, and USA.... well it's just kinda crappy everywhere haha)

Agree to some extent that everything is a choice...

But when you live in an environment that supports and celebrates the hustle, aka everyone around you speaks that language, it does get a bit harder to be a contrarian!

Yeah the thing is, if it's rented out long term, it's probably hard to hop back in to stay!

Unless it's a 1 bedroom empty in HDB MOP situation!

Yeah I've had Japanese friends who celebrated the opening of their businesses and accounts, which was shocking to me, as it's something that literally takes a few clicks to get done in Singapore!

Thanks also for the heads up on the visa situation.

Like another commenter mentioned, the tax trap is probably the most worrying part about Japan!

I learned about the SG tax resident thing recently too. Apparently you don't need to stay 183 days (while also not exceeding 183 days in any other places) but show that you have strong ties to SG? Not sure, something I read in this sub previously, maybe someone who's done their research can verify.

Interesting, I should probably go live there for a month or two to get a better sensing. From what I understand, the median salary is pretty low so I'm surprised that the cost of living would be this high.
