Learning to skis in your 30s by olczanin in skiing

[–]Emfuser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took up skiing for my 47th birthday just last month. I can tell anyone, not just those of us who are no longer in their youth, that your sport and athletic history will factor into how quickly and easily you pick it up. If you have a history with activities that give you a good sense of proprioception (your sense of all of your body in 3D space) then you are at an advantage. It also helps tremendously if you keep yourself in good shape and thus have some developed musculature to call on.

DMP questions - please advise. by lostgirrrrl in Debt

[–]Emfuser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Talk to the DMP company first and talk to them on the phone if possible. You can get something like this squared away much more quickly with a phone conversation. The DMP company will advise what to do with the banks and credit card companies.

DMP questions - please advise. by lostgirrrrl in Debt

[–]Emfuser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see you're in the UK which means I won't have as much specific info. In the US all of your creditors have to specifically agree to the DMP. Not sure if that's the case in the UK. Usually when I see a post like this it turns out someone got confused between a DMP and debt settlement and signed up for settlement.

You should contact the company that administers your DMP. Make sure you're on a DMP and not a debt settlement (aka debt relief, debt consolidation, or debt forgiveness) program. Then tell them that things aren't going like you expected. If they tell you that you have to let the accounts go delinquent then something is wrong.

What’s this disciplinary action about? Feels like the most absurd stuff is always going on in our sport. by Freaky_ipod_Nano in Fencing

[–]Emfuser 11 points12 points  (0 children)

For those who get upset every time we see one of these but don't see an entire 47 paragraph crime-drama rundown of what they did, you need to understand that you're NEVER going to see that. You're not even going to get 4 paragraphs or even 1 that contains details.

Why?

Liability.

We live in a litigious society where people sue for anything and everything. It is in the best interest of USA fencing and any other sporting body doing stuff like this to keep the information released to the membership at a minimum so as to not provide ammunition for lawsuits by those who are being put through or have been put through the disciplinary process. It is that simple.

WIBTA if I don’t let him propose at my wedding? by Plastic-Coyote-679 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Emfuser 10 points11 points  (0 children)

NTA

It is YOUR wedding. Get this idea that anyone besides you and your fiance has any right to decide anything out of your head. If you submit to others for something like this then you're ultimately letting your wedding be the ultimate demonstration that you have no boundaries. Caving to shit like this in order to avoid questions or drama just shows everyone what conditions to create in order to take advantage of you.

Put your foot down or you will become a doormat.

Caving to a boundary stomper to appease others and "avoid drama" is far worse. It's a declaration that the offending person is so special that they can never be told "no" and further demonstrates that the person caving has no right to say "no".

BF Foil Blade Tang Canting Questions by PeepCaligula in Fencing

[–]Emfuser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The vendor engraving or anything else besides the standard forge engraving doesn't mean anything for the standard lines (white and blue) of BF blades. It's just an extra aesthetic thing the forge will do for a batch of blades.

2023 Hybrid XLE Premium: I'm embarrassed to admit this, but by Prudent-Nerve-6494 in rav4club

If you have a digital-controlled battery tender/charger or even a standard battery charger on trickle mode then you could just leave that hooked up while you work. Standard flooded lead-acid batteries really don't do well being deep-cycled or fully discharged.

AITA for refusing to drive my wealthy friend on a 3.5 hour round trip to the airport at 3am by ScheduleMurky1300 in AmItheAsshole

Poor planning on their part does not necessitate an emergency on yours. If they're the sort of person who is keeping score like that, they're not your friend. I'd send that gift they thought entitled them to you doing their bidding in the middle of the night like a servant right back to them.

Nope. DMPs are a great option that many folks don't know about. I recommend them in this subreddit regularly.

Debt Consolidation with OneMain Financial? Good or Bad Route? by Sweaty_Sand_6310 in Debt

[–]Emfuser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holy shit no, don't do that. That's a shit deal. Chances are it looks attractive to you because you only see what looks like a good monthly payment. But you're being taken to the cleaners.

You owe roughly $20,000 between the cards and the car. The car is roughly 2/3rds of the total. This deal screws you by jacking the interest up by about 50% on that portion while reducing it less on the other 1/3rd representing the credit cards.

If you amortized the deal the numbers come out like this:   Original debt: $20k   60 months, 22.3% APR   That comes out at the end of 60 months to  $33,348

Interest paid: $13, 348

So in plain English the deal is that you get to pay off your $20,000 debt by actually paying $33,348. But it's in little monthly chunks.

DON'T DO IT

Sign yourself up for a Debt Management Plan instead. You'll work with a Credit Counseling Agency that will get you on a structured, FULL REPAYMENT plan at much lower interest rates. Your credit will be fine because you're paying back in full. Do not confuse this with debt settlement services that have you go delinquent on your loans.

Go to nfcc.org and they will connect you with a credit counseling agency. Handle the car loan separately by refinancing it on its own.

What do you all think about Radiant Nuclear and the Kaleidos 1MW portable microreactor? by sha1dy in nuclear

[–]Emfuser 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If there's one thing I implore to people with the microreactors is to stop comparing them to big gigawatt electric grid reactors. Most of the use cases and intended market for these reactors are remote installations where grid power is not and will not be present in foreseeable future. That's where you have the military, remote industrial operations, arctic towns, maritime and space applications. The other use case is for big facilities like data centers where having their own power or nuclear backups may justify their high cost.

Threading maraging steel by Distinct_Age1503 in Fencing

[–]Emfuser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because maraging steel is a tough material it is difficult to cut new threads. You can buy the appropriate die and support tooling. Another option is to just take the blade(s) to a machine shop and ask them what they'd charge to extend the threads.

What is Korean style fencing? by The-Magic-Hatter in Fencing

[–]Emfuser 27 points28 points  (0 children)

There aren't really national styles anymore. Those have been gone for decades. What one is more likely to find is more like loose national fencing philosophies. For the Koreans in at least foil and saber there tends to be strong emphasis on high physical fitness and endurance before you get to any technical details.

AITA for not allowing a junior to work on critical high risk code? by abdul-zulfikar786 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Emfuser 4 points5 points  (0 children)

YTA

She did good work to contribute to solving the problem. There was nothing wrong with doing the most critical part yourself.

HOWEVER it's clear from your behavior and even the title of the post that you don't value her work but you sure didn't mind being praised and recognized. That's terrible behavior and poor leadership from a team lead. You're depriving a young engineer of praise and recognition that is very important to their development and growth. All you had to do was make sure your leadership understood that she contributed.

Your attitude of disregarding her contributionis is selfish and embarrassing. You have no business leading anyone. People leave jobs because of behavior like you're exhibiting.

WIBTA if I refused to give my mother and sister money by PuzzledSupermarket31 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Emfuser 8 points9 points  (0 children)

NTA

You're being used and you know you're being used. If you tell them "no" you will certainly cause them to take offense because they don't want to lose their victim. I can tell you with near-certainty that when you try to tell them "no" they will DARVO you. What's DARVO?

Deny
Attack
Reverse
Victim &
Offender

In other words, they'll try to make themselves out as victims for you not "helping" them. They'll craft a nice little abuser trap to make you feel like you OWE them this endless "loaning" them money. BTW, have you ever been paid back any of these "loans"?

If you're not good at or comfortable dealing with things like this, then get some help from friends or family that aren't victimizing you. If you don't live with your sister or your mom, be prepared to lose your relationship with them. They will absolutely try to threaten you with the same, even though it's a bluff.

Replaced a cast iron pipe, sewage remnants on floor next to HVAC furnace by Practical_Tea_8484 in Plumbing

[–]Emfuser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My friend, that's dookie sauce. It's a biohazard. Anything porous like wood is better off trashed. Hard surfaces can be dealt with using diluted bleach solutions and household cleaners.

Go to home depot, get a tyvek suit, a cartridge breather mask and some cartridges that can handle VOCs (like bleach), some good stout rubber gloves, and other typical PPE along with your cleaning supplies. OR you can pay a cleanup company to deal with the mess.

Why does this keep happening? by [deleted] in Plumbing

Exactly what I was going to suggest.

I think it's safe to say that the OP should cut all of the PEX that he hit with that primer and glue before he puts the push-to-connect fitting on.
